    • When recording a movie in the XAVC S format, you must use a Class 10 or faster SDXC card.
    • Refer to the Help Guide for details of XAVC S movie recording features
    • If you format the memory card, all of the data will be erased. Please make sure that the data on the card is backed up before formatting the card.

Before You Start

Determine if Your Camera Needs the Update

This update is only for ILCA-77M2 cameras that currently have a firmware version 1.02. If your camera firmware version is already Version 2.00, this update is not necessary.

Check the version of your camera firmware:

  1. Power on the camera.
  2. Press the Menu button.
  3. At the "Menu" screen, select "Setup".
  4. At the "Setup" screen, select "Version".
  5. The firmware version is displayed on the LCD screen.

    If the current firmware version is 2.00 or higher, the camera does not need this update.

Important Notes

  • This utility is only for use with the Sony® ILCA-77M2 camera. Do not install this utility with any other model.
  • WARNING!: This Digital Camera firmware update and any changes incurred by it are permanent. It is not possible to return to a previous firmware version after updating this firmware. By continuing this update process and downloading and updating this firmware, you acknowledge that you are aware and understand that this update cannot be reversed.
  • This update process requires the following items for proper updating:
    • A computer with:
      • CPU: Intel® processor
        Note: Core™ Solo and Core Duo processors are not supported.
      • Available Hard Disk Space: 200 MB or more
      • Installed Memory (RAM): 512 MB or more
      • A USB port.
      • Macintosh® OS X versions 10.5 to 10.11.
        IMPORTANT: For OS X version 10.10 or 10.11, please ensure the Mac OS Driver Loader has been installed before continuing to update your firmware.
        Note: Versions 10.6 and 10.7 are not supported in 64-bit kernel mode. If your computer uses the 64-bit kernel by default, you can start up with the 32-bit kernel by holding down the 3 and 2 keys during startup.
    • Camera power supply:
      • This update can only be performed when the remaining battery level has three bars Battery Indicater or more. When performing the firmware update, it's recommended that you use a fully charged NP-FM500H rechargeable battery pack, or the AC-PW10AM AC adapter/charger (sold separately).
      • WARNING!: Do not remove the battery pack or AC adapter during the update process, otherwise, the camera may become inoperable due to the sudden power loss.
    • USB cable:
      • Use only the USB cable supplied with the camera.
        Update functionality is not guaranteed with any other USB cable.
  • To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Download & Install

Download and Update the Firmware

  1. Download the Update_ILCA77M2V200.dmg file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the Update_ILCA77M2V200.dmg.
    Note: Do not connect the camera to the computer until instructed to do so.
  3. Double-click the "Firmware Updater" Firmware Updater Icon icon.
  4. At the Password prompt screen, enter the Name and Password for the administrative account, and then click "OK".

    Note: If a FirmwareUpdater message can't be opened because the identity of the developer cannot be confirmed message displays on the screen when you double-click Firmware Update, please follow the following steps:
    • Click "OK"
    • Click the FirmwareUpdater icon while pressing the "Control" key, and then select "Open" in the menu.

  5. Remove the memory card from the camera
  6. Power on the camera.
  7. On the camera, press the "Menu" button, select "Setup", and then "USB Connection" and ensure "Mass Storage" is selected.

  8. Connect the camera to your computer using the supplied USB cable.
    Note: On the camera, "USB Mode" appears on the LCD screen.
  9. At the "Firmware Updater" screen, click "Next".

    WARNING!: Do not power off the camera or disconnect the USB cable until the update process is complete.
  10. When the updater recognizes the camera connection, the next "Firmware Updater" screen is displayed, and the camera screen displays the message, "Follow computer instructions."
    Note: Do not cover the eyepiece sensors on the camera during the update; otherwise the LCD monitor may switch to the viewfinder. If you are unable see anything on the camera LCD monitor, please press the "FINDER/LCD" button.

    Notes:
    • If the message "Could not find the camera for this update." appears on the computer display, try disconnecting and reconnection the USB cable or try another USB port on the computer.
    • Sometimes when the camera is connected to the computer with the USB cable, a message appears to restart the computer. If this occurs, remove the battery pack or AC adapter from the camera, restart the computer, and then start the firmware update procedure again.
  11. At the "Firmware Updater" screen, click "Next".

  12. When the following screen is displayed, check the version number at the lower left.

    If the current version is "1.02", click "Next".
    Note: If the current version is "2.00", your camera does not need this update. Stop the USB connection, click "Finish", then remove the battery or disconnect the AC adaptor briefly and then power on the camera again.

  13. WARNING!: Do not disconnect the USB cable from the camera or the computer.
  14. On the camera, at the "Resets camera" message, press the center of the control button to reset the camera.

  15. At the "Firmware Updater" screen, click "Next".

  16. When the following screen is displayed, click "Run".
    Note: The update process takes about ten minutes to complete.

    WARNING!: Do not power off the camera or disconnect the USB cable until the update process is complete.
  17. When the update is complete, the following screen is displayed, click "Finish".

  18. Disconnect the USB cable, power off the camera, then remove the battery pack or AC adapter.
  19. Reconnect the battery pack or AC adapter and power on the camera.

Check the Firmware Version After Updating (optional)

  1. Power on the camera.
  2. Press the Menu button.
  3. At the "Menu" screen, select "Setup".
  4. At the "Setup" screen, select "Version".
  5. The firmware version is displayed on the LCD screen.

    Note: If the firmware version number is not 2.00, please download and install the firmware update again.
