How to troubleshoot low sound level, unable to raise the volume, or other no sound issues.

IMPORTANT: If model-specific information is needed to complete these steps, refer to the instructions supplied with the product. Manuals are posted on your model support page.

To troubleshoot the issue, check the following.

    • For a low sound or no sound issue.
      • Check that both the connected device and the speaker are turned on and the volume is turned up.
      • Check if the connected device is playing back a music file.
      • If the connected device has functions or modes, set them to the appropriate ones.
      • When music files on your computer are playing back, check that the audio output settings of your computer, such as Bluetooth® settings, etc., are set correctly.
      • If your device is not connected to a Bluetooth device, try pairing the connected device with the unit once more.
      • Move metallic objects away from the speaker if there is one.
      • If your device is connected using a cord, temporarily unplug the cord and then firmly reconnect it to the terminals of the connected device and the speaker.
      • If headphones are connected, try disconnecting the headphones.
      • Depending on the product, ducts at the bottom of speakers may be covered by seals. Check whether they have been removed.
    • Cannot increase the volume.
      • Some of the Sony® portable audio players are designed to limit the volume level with the Automatic Volume Limiter System (AVLS) . The AVLS function is preset to ON. Although it is recommended to leave the AVLS setting on to protect the hearing of the listener, maximum volume cannot be achieved until the AVLS feature is turned Off.

NOTE: The procedure to turn the AVLS feature off varies by model. Some units have an AVLS switch, where other units offer the AVLS setting in the menu of the portable player. Consult the instruction manual of your portable player for specific information. Manuals are posted on your model support page.

      • If you are using external passive speakers, the power and volume for the speakers are drawn from the connected unit. Adjust the volume setting on your portable player in order to increase the level of sound coming through the speakers.
    • If the issue is not resolved.
      • Turn the unit off and back on. If there is a RESET function, perform a RESET. Refer to the operating instructions that came with product for further information.

If the situation does not improve, even after following these steps, service may be required.  Go to Product Repair.
