Before You Start
This update only applies for DSC-G3 cameras that currently have a firmware version 1. If your camera firmware version is already Version 2, then this update is not necessary.
How to check your camera's firmware version:
- Slide the lens cover open.
- Power off the camera.
- Press and hold down the "T" side of the Zoom button and then simultaneously press the (Playback) button to power on the camera.
Notes:- If the clock is not set the "Clock Settings" screen appears. Please set the clock to continue.
- If there are no images saved in the camera "No images" appears on the screen. This is normal.
- On the LCD Touch Screen, touch "HOME"
- At the "HOME" screen, touch (Settings).
- At the "Settings" screen, touch "Main Settings", and then touch "OK".
- At the "Main Settings" screen, touch (down triangle) twice to display page 3/7.
- The current firmware version is displayed. If the "Version" is "1", please continue with this update. If the "Version is other than "1", this update is not necessary.
- Power off the camera after checking the firmware version number.
A computer with:
- Available Hard Disk Space: 128 MB or more
- Installed Memory (RAM): 128 MB or more
- A USB port or a Memory Stick Duo slot.
- One of the following Microsoft® Windows® operating systems installed:
- Windows Vista® (with Service Pack 1)
- Windows XP (with Service Pack 3)
Note: 64-bit versions of Windows XP are not supported. - Windows 2000 Professional (with Service Pack 4)
Camera power supply:
- When performing the firmware update, use a fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-BD1 (a battery pack came with the camera) or the AC adaptor AC-LS5K (sold separately).
WARNING!!: The camera may not operate properly if the power is interrupted during the update.
USB cable (if your computer does not have a Memory Stick Duo slot):
- Use only the USB cable supplied with the camera.
Note: Update functionality is not guaranteed if you use any other USB cable.
Recording media:
- Memory Stick Duo or Memory Stick PRO Duo™ media with capacity of 64 MB or more
Note: The Memory Stick Duo media should be formatted with the camera before using it to perform the update.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to backup all pictures and data from the Memory Stick Duo media before formatting it.
- WARNING!!: This update is only for use with the Sony®
DSC-G3 camera. Do not install this update on any other camera. - When you update the firmware, the camera is initialized to the factory settings. You will need to set the date, time, and other personal settings after performing the update.
Note: Please make a backup copy or note of the personal settings and data stored in the camera before updating the firmware. - IMPORTANT: Images stored in the camera's internal memory will be erased during the firmware update. Be sure to copy your images to the computer before performing the update.
- When you update the firmware, the file number of the images taken is reset, so new images may have the same file number as ones previously taken.
IMPORTANT: Be careful not to overwrite existing image files when you copy new images to your computer. - WARNING!!: While performing the firmware update make sure to supply power to the camera with a fully charged battery or with the AC Adaptor and multi cable, as the camera may not work properly if the power runs out during the update.
- It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

- Click the "Download Now" link at the top or bottom of this page.
- At the "Software Agreement" dialog, read the agreement, then, if you agree, click "Accept Agree" to continue with the download.
- Download the DSCG3V2.exe file to a temporary or download folder (please note this folder for reference).
- Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the DSCG3V2.exe file to extract the D-G3V2.dat update file.
Notes:- By default the D-G3V2.dat file is extracted to the same folder as the DSCG3V2.exe file.
- Depending on your computer configuration, the ".dat" file extension may not be displayed.
- The D-G3V2.dat file is the software update file for the camera. Please follow the steps below to install the software to the camera. Do not double-click the D-G3V2.dat file.
- Prepare the Memory Stick Duo media for the update by formatting it with the camera.
IMPORTANT: The recording media must be formatted in the camera. All data on the recording media, including even protected images, will be erased by formatting and cannot be restored. Be sure to backup all pictures and data from the Memory Stick Duo media before formatting it. - Copy the D-G3V2.dat update file to the Memory Stick Duo media using one of the methods below.
- If your computer has a Memory Stick Duo slot:
- If Picture Motion Browser is installed in the computer, right-click the "PMB Media Check Tool" icon in the task tray and select "Exit".
- Insert the Memory Stick Duo media you formatted with the camera into the Memory Stick Duo slot of your computer.
Note: When you insert the Memory Stick Duo media into the slot some windows may open. Close any windows that open. - Copy the D-G3V2.dat update file to the Memory Stick Duo media.
- If your computer does not have a Memory Stick Duo slot:
- Insert the formatted Memory Stick Duo media into the camera.
- Insert the fully charged battery into the camera, or connect the AC Adaptor (not supplied) and the multi cable (not supplied) to the camera.
- Press the (Playback) button to power on the camera.
- On the LCD Touch Screen, touch "HOME"
- At the "HOME" screen, touch (Settings).
- At the "Settings" screen, touch "Main Settings", and then touch "OK".
- At the "Main Settings" screen, touch (down triangle) once to display page 2/6.
- Make sure that "USB Connect" is set to "Auto". If it is not set to "Auto", touch "USB Connect", touch "OK", then touch "Auto", and then "OK".
- If Picture Motion Browser is installed in the computer, right-click the "PMB Media Check Tool" icon in the task tray and select "Exit".
- Connect the camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable.
Note: When you connect the camera some windows may open. Close any windows that open. - Copy the D-G3V2.dat update file to the Memory Stick Duo media in the camera.
- When the file has been copied to the Memory Stick Duo media disconnect the USB cable.
- If your computer has a Memory Stick Duo slot:
- WARNING!!: While performing the firmware update make sure to supply power to the camera with a fully charged battery or with the AC Adaptor and multi cable, as the camera may not work properly if the power runs out during the update.
- Insert the Memory Stick Duo media with the D-G3V2.dat update file into the camera.
- Slide the lens cover open.
- Power off the camera.
- Press and hold down the "T" side of the Zoom button and then simultaneously press the (Playback) button to power on the camera.
Note: If there are no images saved in the camera "No images" appears on the screen. This is normal. - On the LCD Touch Screen, touch "HOME"
- At the "HOME" screen, touch (Settings).
- At the "Settings" screen, touch "Main Settings", and then touch "OK".
- At the "Main Settings" screen, touch (down triangle) twice to display page 3/7.
- The current firmware version is displayed. Touch "Version", and then "OK".
- If an error message is displayed, please check the following:
- If "Error20 No software file" is displayed, the D-G3V2.dat update file is not on the Memory Stick Duo media. Return to the Download the Update and Copy it to Memory Stick Duo Media section and try again.
- If "Error30 No Memory Stick" is displayed, confirm that the Memory Stick Duo media is correctly inserted in the camera. If it is, return to the Download the Update and Copy it to Memory Stick Duo Media section and try again.
- If "Error40 Invalid file" is displayed, please return to the Determine Whether or Not This Firmware Update is Needed for Your Camera section and confirm that the current firmware is version 1.
- At the "Version" screen, confirm that the "Current Version" is "1", and that the "New Version" is "2", and then touch "OK" to install the update.
Note: If the "Current Version" is not "1", or the "New Version" is not "2", touch "Cancel" to return to the "Main Settings" screen. - At the "Select OK for updating" message, touch "OK" to start the update.
WARNING!!: Do not power off the camera during the update. Interrupting the firmware update may cause the camera to function incorrectly. - The screen turns blank for 30 seconds, then the Updating screen appears and the circles blink. When all six circles on the upper line are lit, the screen turns blank for 15 seconds, and then the circles on lower line start blinking. When all 12 circles are lit, the update is finished.
Notes:- The firmware update takes about 20 minutes.
- If the circles stop blinking for more than 30 seconds, the update may have failed. Please wait a little longer and if the circles still are not blinking power off the camera, wait at least 10 seconds, and then return to the Download the Update and Copy it to Memory Stick Duo Media section and try again.
- If "Error10 Turn off and on again" appears, the update has failed. Power off the camera, wait at least 10 seconds, and then return to the Download the Update and Copy it to Memory Stick Duo Media section and try again.
- When the "Finished Turn off and on again" message is displayed, touch "OK".
Note: The camera will automatically power off and then on again. - At the "Clock Setting" screen, set the clock and then power off the camera.
- Slide the lens cover open.
- Power off the camera.
- Press and hold down the "T" side of the Zoom button and then simultaneously press the (Playback) button to power on the camera.
- On the LCD Touch Screen, touch "HOME"
- At the "HOME" screen, touch (Settings).
- At the "Settings" screen, touch "Main Settings", and then touch "OK".
- At the "Main Settings" screen, touch (down triangle) twice to display page 3/7.
- The current firmware version is displayed. If the "Version" is "2", the camera has been successfully updated.
- Power off the camera after checking the firmware version number.
