Firmware is the operational software that is embedded in your Cyber-shot® camera. This utility updates the firmware of the DSC-R1 Cyber-shot digital still camera to version 2.

This firmware update is only for DSC-R1 cameras with serial numbers in the following ranges:

United States Serial Number Ranges

  • 3,500,001 through 3,501,390
  • 3,501,531 through 3,501,650
  • 3,501,791 through 3,501,840

Canada Serial Number Range

  • 4,400,001 through 4,400,700

NOTE: The serial number is located on the bottom of the camera.

Important Notes

WARNING!!: This utility is only for use with the Sony® DSC-R1 Cyber-shot® digital still camera. Do not install this utility with any other model of Cyber-shot camera.


WARNING!!: This Digital Camera firmware update and any changes incurred by it are permanent. It is not possible to return to a previous firmware version after updating this firmware. By continuing this update process and downloading and updating this firmware, you acknowledge that you are aware and understand that this update cannot be reversed.


  • This update process requires the following items for proper updating:

    • A computer with:
      • Available Hard Disk Space: 5 MB or more
      • Installed Memory: 32 MB or more
      • A USB port or a Memory Stick® slot
      • One of these operating systems installed:
        • Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
        • Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional
        • Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional
        • Microsoft® Windows® Me (Millennium Edition)
        • Microsoft® Windows® 98SE (Second Edition)
        • Microsoft® Windows® 98
    • Camera power supply:
      • This update cannot be performed with the camera powered by battery. Be sure to use the supplied AC-L15 AC adaptor to insure constant power.
        WARNING!!: The camera may not operate properly if the power is interrupted during the update.
    • USB cable
      • Use only the USB cable supplied with the camera
        WARNING!!: Update functionality is not guaranteed if you use another commercially available USB cable.
    • Recording media
      • Memory Stick® media with capacity of 16 MB or more
      • Memory Stick PRO™ media
      • Memory Stick Duo™ media
      • Memory Stick PRO Duo™ media
      • CF (CompactFlash) card
      • Microdrive
  • Performing the firmware update will return settings other than [Video Out] and [Language] to the default settings. Click here to see a list of the settings that will be to returned the default settings. To restore your personal settings, you will need to set them again.
    WARNING!!: The file number of the next image to be recorded will be reset to "DSC0001", regardless of the images previously recorded. If you have already recorded images with the camera, newly recorded images may have the same file numbers as images previously recorded. Take care to avoid file name conflicts and to avoid overwriting previously recorded images when transferring images to your computer.
  • It is highly recommended to print out these instructions as a reference during the installation process.

If the Following Errors Appear

Download and Extraction Instructions
  1. Click the Download link at the top or bottom of this page to view the "Software Agreement".
  2. Read the agreement, then, if you agree, click "ACCEPT AGREEMENT" button to download the firmware update file.
  3. Download the DSCR1V2.EXE (1.45 MB) (for Windows OS) or the DSCR1V2.ASH.SIT (1.52 MB) (for Mac OS® 9.1 / 9.2 / X v10.3) or DSCR1V2.ASH.ZIP (1.40 MB) (for Mac OS® X v10.4) file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  4. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the downloaded file to begin the extraction. One file named DSCR1V2.ASH (3.00 MB) will be extracted.
    NOTE: Depending on your operating system, the file may be automatically extracted while downloading.

Software Updating Instructions
  1. Prepare the recording media (Memory Stick / CF card / Microdrive) to use for the update, then format it with the camera.
    WARNING!!: The recording media must be formatted in the camera. All data on the recording media, including even protected images, will be erased by formatting and cannot be restored.
  2. Copy the firmware update file (DSCR1V2.ASH) to the recording media with one of the procedures below depending on your computer environment.
    • If your computer has a memory card slot compatible with your recording media:
      1. Insert recording media that has been formatted with the camera in the memory card slot of your computer.
      2. Copy the update file (DSCR1V2.ASH) to the recording media.
    • If you have a memory card reader compatible with your recording media and your computer does not have an appropriate memory card slot:
      1. Connect the memory card reader to the computer.
      2. Insert recording media that has been formatted with the camera in the memory card reader.
      3. Copy the update file (DSCR1V2.ASH) to the recording media.

    NOTE: Sony cannot assure the performance of third party media cards and card readers used in this update process. If in doubt, please refer to the in-camera process below.
    • If your computer does not have a memory card slot compatible with your recording media and you do not have an appropriate memory card reader:
      1. Insert recording media that has been formatted with the camera in the appropriate slot of your camera.
      2. Set the /CF switch to if you are using Memory Stick media, or to CF if you are using a CF card or Microdrive.
      3. Connect the AC adaptor to the camera.
      4. Set the mode dial to (Auto adjustment mode), and turn on the power.
      5. Press the "MENU" button to display the menu.
      6. Move the multi-selector rightward to [Setup], and then move it further rightward as needed to display the setup screen (as shown at right).
      7. In the "Setup" screen, move the multi-selector downward to select [Setup 2].
      8. In the [Setup 2] screen, set [USB Connect] to [Auto].
      9. Connect the camera to the computer with the USB cable.
      10. Copy the update file (DSCR1V2.ASH) to the recording media inserted in the camera.
      11. When the access lamp near the /CF switch stops blinking, copying is finished. Turn off the camera, and disconnect the USB cable.

  3. Prepare the camera
    1. If the camera is connected to the computer with the USB cable, disconnect the USB cable.
    2. Insert the recording media (Memory Stick / CF card / Microdrive) containing the update file (DSCR1V2.ASH) into the camera, if it is not already inserted.
  4. Set the camera to update mode
    1. Connect the AC adaptor to the camera and to an AC power source.
      NOTE: This update cannot be performed with the camera powered by battery. Be sure to use the supplied AC-L15 AC adaptor to insure constant power.
      WARNING!: The camera may not operate properly if the power is interrupted during the update.
    2. Set the mode dial to (Auto adjustment mode) before turning on the power.
    3. Press and hold the "MENU" button, and while holding, power on the camera, releasing the "MENU" button only after 2 seconds have passed.
      NOTE: When the "Cyber-shot" screen disappears, release the MENU button.
    4. If the menu is not displayed, press the "MENU" button.
    5. Move the multi-selector rightward to [Setup], and then move it further rightward as needed to display the setup screen (as shown at right).
    6. In the "Setup" screen, move the multi-selector downward to select [Setup 2].
      • If [Version] is not displayed, turn off the power and redo this section of the procedure (Set the camera to update mode).
      • If "2" is displayed in [Version], this update is not required.
      • Regardless of what is displayed in [Version], this update has already been implemented for cameras with a serial number that is not listed in the applicable serial number ranges. You do not need to update the firmware if your camera's serial number is not listed in the applicable serial number ranges.


  5. Update the firmware version
    1. Use the multi-selector to select [Version], and then select [Update].
      NOTE: The "Access" screen briefly appears.

    2. If "Error20: No software file" appears:
      • Cause: The firmware update file does not exist in the recording media.
      • Solution: Check the contents in the recording media with the computer, and then redo the entire Software Updating Instructions procedure.
    3. If "Error30: Format Memory Stick before use" appears:
      • Cause: There are multiple files or folders on the Memory Stick media because it was not formatted before the firmware update file was transferred.
      • Solution: Format the Memory Stick media in the camera, and then redo the entire Software Updating Instructions procedure.
    4. If "Error30: Format CF card before use" appears:
      • Cause: There are multiple files or folders on the CF card or Microdrive because it was not formatted before the firmware update file was transferred.
      • Solution: Format the CF card or Microdrive in the camera, and then redo the entire Software Updating Instructions procedure.
    5. If "Error40: Invalid file" appears:
      • Cause: The contents of the file in the recording media are invalid, its version is not newer than the original version, or the firmware is for a different model camera.
      • Solution: Check the version of the firmware in your camera and, if necessary, download the correct firmware, and then redo the entire Software Updating Instructions procedure.
    6. Check the version to be updated, and if it is correct, select [OK] to start the update.
      NOTE: If you select [Cancel], the "Setup" screen appears again.
    7. Select [OK] to start the update.
      NOTE: If you select [Cancel], the "Setup" screen appears again.
    8. During the update, the following "Updating" screen appears and the circle signs will blink.
      NOTE: When all three circles are lit, the update is finished.

      • If the circles stop blinking in the "Updating" screen for more than 30 seconds:
        • Cause: The update may have failed.
        • Solution: Contact a nearest Sony service center listed on the back of the camera's warranty card.
      • If "Error10: Error" appears:
        • Cause: The update may have failed.
        • Solution: Contact a nearest Sony service center listed on the back of the camera's warranty card.
    9. When the update is successfully finished, the "Finished" screen appears. Power off the camera.
    10. With the camera power turned off, use a pointed object to press the "RESET" button.
      NOTE: When you press the RESET button, settings other than [Video Out] and [Language] will return to the default settings. To restore your personal settings, please set them again.
      WARNING!:The file number of the next image to be recorded will be reset to "DSC0001", regardless of the images previously recorded. If you have already recorded images with the camera, newly recorded images may have the same file numbers as images previously recorded. Take care to avoid file name conflicts and to avoid overwriting previously recorded images when transferring images to your computer.
    11. Click here to see a list of the settings that will be to returned the default settings. To restore your personal settings, please set them again.
  6. Check the firmware version after updating
    1. Connect the AC adaptor to the camera and to an AC power source.
    2. Set the mode dial to (Auto adjustment mode) before turning on the power.
    3. Turn on the power while pressing and holding the "MENU" button for longer than 2 seconds.
      NOTE: When the "Cyber-shot" screen disappears, release the MENU button.
    4. After you set the clock, the menu is displayed.
    5. Move the multi-selector rightward to [Setup], and then move it further rightward.
    6. In the "Setup" screen, move the multi-selector downward to select [Setup 2].
    7. Check to see if the firmware version is updated.
    8. If the version has successfully been updated, format the recording media (Memory Stick / CF card / Microdrive).
