Before You Start

Determine if Your Camera Needs the Update

IMPORTANT!! This update is only for DSC-RX100 cameras that currently have firmware version 1.00. If your camera firmware version is already Version 1.10 or higher, this update is not necessary.

Check the version of your camera firmware:

  1. Power on the camera.
  2. On the camera, select "MENU", "Setup", and then "Version".
  3. If the version number is Ver. 1.10 or higher, the camera does not need this update.

Important Notes

  • This utility is only for use with the Sony® DSC-RX100 cameras. Do not install this utility with any other model.
  • WARNING!!: This firmware update and any changes incurred by it are permanent. It is not possible to return to a previous firmware version after updating this firmware. By continuing this update process and downloading and updating this firmware, you acknowledge that you are aware and understand that this update cannot be reversed.
  • WARNING!!: Do not power off the camera or remove the battery pack until the update process is complete.
  • This update process requires the following items for proper updating:
    • A computer with:
      • Available Hard Disk Space: 200 MB or more
      • Installed Memory (RAM): 512 MB or more
      • A USB port.
      • One of the following Microsoft® Windows® operating systems installed:
        • Windows 10
        • Windows 8/8.1
        • Windows 7 (with Service Pack 1)
        • Windows Vista® (with Service Pack 2)
          Note: Starter Edition of Windows Vista is not supported.
    • Camera power supply:
      • This update can only be performed when the remaining battery level indicator has three bars Battery Indicater or more. When performing the firmware update, it is recommended to use a fully charged NP-BX1 rechargeable battery pack.
        WARNING!!: The camera may not operate properly if the power is interrupted during the update.
    • USB cable:
      • Use only the USB cable supplied with the camera.
        IMPORTANT: Update functionality is not guaranteed with any other USB cable.
  • To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Prepare the Camera for the Firmware Update

  1. Remove the memory card from the camera
  2. Make sure the camera battery is fully charged.

Download & Install

Download and Update the Firmware

  1. Download the Update_DSCRX100V110.exe file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
    Note: For Windows 8/8.1 and 10, the default settings for Internet Explorer® will save the file in the Downloads folder. For Windows 10, use File Explorer to locate the Downloads folder, for Windows 8/8.1, click the "Desktop" tile from the Start screen and then locate the Downloads folder using Windows Explorer.
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the Update_DSCRX100V110.exe file to begin the Firmware Updater.
  3. At the "Firmware Updater" screen, please follow the instructions.
  4. Power on the camera.
    Note: If the "Date and Time Setting" screen appears, please complete all settings before proceeding.
  5. Make sure the USB Connection Setting is set to "Mass Storage".
    On the camera, select "MENU", "Setup", "USB Connection", and then ensure "Mass Storage" is selected.

  6. Make sure the memory card is removed from the camera.
  7. Connect the camera to your computer using the supplied USB cable. When the camera is connected to the computer, the LCD screen of the camera turns off. Please proceed to the next step.
    Note: If the message "Could not find the camera for this update." appears on the computer display, try disconnecting and reconnection of the USB cable or try another USB port on the computer.
  8. Verify that the remove hardware icon Remove Hardware Icon or Remove Hardware Icon is displayed in the task tray at the lower right-hand corner of the computer screen.
  9. After completing the steps above, click "Next" at the "Firmware Updater" screen.

  10. WARNING!!: Do not power off the camera or disconnect the USB cable until the update process is complete.
  11. When the updater recognizes the camera connection, the next "Firmware Updater" screen is displayed on the computer, and the camera screen displays "Follow the instructions on the computer".

  12. At the "Firmware Updater" screen, click "Next".

  13. When the following screen is displayed, check the version number at the lower left.

    If the current version is "1.00", click "Next".
    Note: If the current version is "1.10 or higher", your camera does not need this update. Stop the USB connection by clicking the remove hardware icon Remove Hardware Icon or Remove Hardware Icon in the task tray in the lower right corner of the computer screen and then click the "Finish" button on the "Firmware Updater" screen. Then power off the camera, briefly remove the battery pack or the AC adaptor, and then power on the camera again.
  14. To perform the firmware update, follow the steps to reset the camera.
  15. Reset the camera:
    1. In the task tray at the lower right hand corner of the computer screen, click the "Safely Remove Hardware" Remove Hardware Icon or Remove Hardware Icon icon and stop the USB connection. If the icons are not displayed on the task tray, please proceed to the next step.
      IMPORTANT: Do not disconnect the camera from the computer.
    2. On the camera, press the center of the control wheel to execute reset.

      Note: The camera screen turns off when the center of the control wheel is pushed.
  16. At the "Firmware Updater" screen, click "Next".

  17. Click Next Screen
  18. After resetting, reconnection of the camera is verified, and the next Firmware Updater screen appears.
  19. When the following screen is displayed, click "Run".
    Note: The update process takes about fifteen minutes to complete.

    WARNING!!: Do not power off the camera or disconnect the USB cable until the update process is complete.
  20. When the update process is completed, the camera will automatically restart. The message "Recovering data. Please wait" may appear for a few minutes before restarting. Make sure the camera is powered on and wait until the LCD screen appears again. When the LCD screen appears, click "Finish".

  21. In the task tray at the lower right hand corner of the computer screen, click the "Safely Remove Hardware" Remove Hardware Icon or Remove Hardware Icon icon and stop the USB connection.
  22. You may now disconnect the USB cable.

Check the Firmware Version After Updating (optional)

Please follow the steps below to confirm that the firmware was successfully updated:

  1. On the camera, select "MENU", "Setup", and then "Version".
  2. If the version number is Ver. 1.10, the camera firmware was successfully updated.
