Is the Windows 8.1 Update required in order to receive new updates?
According to Microsoft® company, starting on June 10th, 2014 the Windows® 8.1 Update will be required in order to receive new updates and keep Windows 8.1 computers current.
Those who have the Windows Update utility set to Automatic Update do not need to be concerned because the update will be installed automatically prior to June 10th. After that date, those who manage updates manually or who are on a metered network and have not installed the Windows 8.1 Update will only see the option to install the Windows 8.1 Update in the Windows Update utility. No new updates will be visible until the Windows 8.1 Update has been installed.
Over the next several weeks the Windows Update utility will gradually be installed the Windows 8.1 Update on existing Windows 8.1 computers for those who have the Windows Update utility set to Automatic Update - which includes the vast majority of Windows 8.1 computers. If your computer has the Windows Update utility set to Automatic Update, aside from rebooting the computer you will not need to take any action as the installation will happen in the background. If you would like to install the update sooner, rather than waiting for it to be installed automatically over the coming month, you can visit the Microsoft Windows 8.1 Update page that explains how to download and install the update immediately.
The Windows 8.1 Update will not install automatically for customers on metered networks, even if the Windows Update utility is set to Automatic Update. If this includes your computer, you will receive a notification over the coming weeks alerting you to manually install the Windows Update. If you are on a metered network it is recommended that you connect to an un-metered connection or public Wi-Fi connection to install the update from the Microsoft Windows 8.1 Update page.
The small remaining percentage of customers who do not have the Windows Update utility set to Automatic Update and who manage the download and installation of updates themselves will need to go to the Microsoft Windows 8.1 Update page and get the update manually.
