Before You Start


Applicable Models

This firmware update is intended for the NW-E390 series Walkman players that have firmware version 1.00 installed.

Note: This update is not necessary if your Walkman player has already been updated by the automatic firmware update function to version 1.01.


To check the firmware version of your player, please follow the steps below:

  1. Press and hold the BACK/HOME button until the Home menu appears.
  2. At the Home menu, tap the Settings icon.
  3. At the Settings menu, tap Common Settings.
  4. At the Common Settings menu, tap Unit Information.
  5. Confirm the firmware version. If the firmware version is 1.01 or higher, this update is not necessary.

Important Notes

  • After performing this update, it is not possible to return to or install a previous version of the firmware.
  • It is strongly recommended that you transfer all tracks and data from the player to the computer before performing this update. Tracks and data that remain on the player may be damaged or deleted during the update process.
  • In order to install this update, there must be at least 30 MB of free space on the player. If there is not enough free space in the built-in flash memory, transfer any unnecessary data back to the computer to increase free space.
    Please follow the steps below to check the amount of free space on the player:
    1. Press and hold the BACK/HOME button until the Home menu appears.
    2. At the Home menu, tap Settings .
    3. At the Settings menu, tap Common Settings.
    4. At the Common Settings menu, tap Unit Information.
    5. Confirm that there is at least 30 MB of free space (memory).
  • During the installation of this file, be sure that you are logged in as the Administrator or as a user with Administrative rights.
  • To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Download & Install

Download and Installation Instructions

  1. To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs.
  2. Click the Download Now link to begin the download process.
  3. Read the Software Download License Agreement and, if you agree, click Accept Agreement.
  4. Download the NW-E390_V1_01.dmg file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  5. Connect the player to the computer with the supplied USB cable.
    Note: If a Portable Device window opens, click Cancel to close the window and continue.
  6. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the NW-E390_V1_01.dmg file to begin the installation.
  7. Carefully follow the onscreen prompts to complete the installation.
    IMPORTANT: Do not disconnect the player from the computer while the update is in progress.
    Note for macOS 10.15 users: When you start the update tool the first time on macOS 10.15, a ["Software Update Tool" would like to access files on a removable volume] message is shown. If you click [OK], the updating starts. If you click [Don’t Allow], an error will be displayed and the updating will fail.
  8. When the message of completing upgrading is displayed, click Finish.

Confirm Successful Update (optional)

  1. Press and hold the BACK/HOME button until the Home menu appears.
  2. At the Home menu, tap the Settings icon.
  3. At the Settings menu, tap Common Settings.
  4. At the Common Settings menu, tap Unit Information.
  5. Confirm the firmware version. If the Firmware Version is 1.01 the update is successfully installed.
