This utility updates the firmware of the NW-E405 and NW-E407 Network Walkman™ Portable IC Audio Player to version 2.00 and provides the following benefits:

  • Clock2 is added to the Display Screens displayed during playback and stop.
  • Supports the ability to download and install an additional display screen.
  • Resolves an issue where the unit may stop responding when searching by artist name or during Shuffle Repeat.
    NOTE: This issue has already been resolved in the following units:
    • NW-E405 with serial number 5058146 or highter.
    • NW-E407 with serial number 5026381 or highter.

Before You Start

Important Notes
  • This firmware update is only for the NW-E405 or NW-E407 Network Walkman™ Portable IC Audio Player with firmware version 1.00.
  • Please follow these steps to confirm the current firmware version:
    1. While playback is stopped, press and hold the "SEARCH/MENU" button until the menu is displayed.
    2. Rotate the Shuttle switch to select "Advanced Menu", then press the Play/Stop Button.
    3. Rotate the Shuttle switch to select "Information", then press the Play/Stop Button.
    4. Rotate the Shuttle switch to confirm that the firmware version at "4:" is 1.00.
  • To protect against data loss, please transfer all tracks and data from the NW-E405 or NW-E407 to the computer before updating the firmware. There is a possibility that data stored on the device might be lost during the update process.
  • This update requires approximately 3MB of free space be available on the unit in order to perform this upgrade.
  • If you are using Microsoft® Windows® 2000 or Windows XP operating system, be sure that you are logged in as theAdministratoror as a user with Administrative rights, during the installation of this update.
  • To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
  • It is highly recommended to print out these instructions as a reference during the installation process.

Download and Installation Instructions
  1. To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
  2. Close the SonicStage® software, if it is running.
    NOTE:If "Run SonicStage automatically when an ATRAC Audio Device is connected" is set, please uncheck the check box from "Tools"-"Options"-"General" within the SonicStage software.
  3. Download the NW-E40X_V2_0C.EXE file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  4. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click theNW-E40X_V2_0C.EXEfile to begin the installation.
  5. At the "WinZip Self-Extractor - NW-E40X_V2_OC.EXE" screen, click "Unzip"
    NOTE:The update files will be extracted to the folder "C:\WMFWUPG\NW-E40X_V2_0C".
  6. At the "WinZip Self-Extractor" box, click "OK".
  7. At the "WinZip Self-Extractor - NW-E40X_V2_OC.EXE" screen, click "Close"
  8. Connect the Network Walkman Portable IC Audio Player to the computer.
  9. Go to the directory "C:\WMFWUPG\NW-E40X_V2_0C" and double-click theFWUpdater.exefile to begin the firmware update.
  10. Follow the on screen prompts.
    NOTE:Do not disconnect the USB cable during the firmware update process.
  11. When the "complete" message appears, click "Finish".

The firmware update is complete.

Installation Confirmation (Optional)
  1. While playback is stopped, press and hold the "SEARCH/MENU" button until the menu is displayed.
  2. Rotate the Shuttle switch to select "Advanced Menu", then press the Play/Stop Button.
  3. Rotate the Shuttle switch to select "Information", then press the Play/Stop Button.
  4. Rotate the Shuttle switch to confirm that the firmware version at "4:" is 2.00.
