Before You Start

Determine if Your Lens Needs the Update

Check the version of your camera lens System Software:

  1. Attach the lens to the camera.
    Note: Please make sure the camera is off before you attach the lens.
  2. Power on the camera.
  3. Press the Menu button.
  4. At the Menu screen, select Setup.
  5. At the "Setup" screen, select "Version".
  6. The System Software version is displayed on the LCD screen.

    Note: If the current version is Ver.02 or higher, the camera lens does not need this update.

Important Notes

  • This System Software update can be performed only when the lens is attached to a camera. Make sure to power off the camera and attched your lens before performing this update.
    This Lens system software update is available for the E-mount body.
  • WARNING!: This System Software update and any changes incurred by it are permanent. It is not possible to return to a previous version after updating this System Software. By continuing this update process, downloading and installing this software, you acknowledge that you are aware and understand that this update cannot be reversed.
  • This update process requires the following items for proper updating:
    • A computer with:
      • CPU: Intel® processor
        Note: Core™ Solo and Core Duo processors are not supported.
      • Available Hard Disk Space: 200 MB or more
      • Installed Memory (RAM): 512 MB or more
      • A USB port.
      • Apple® Mac OS X® version 10.9 - 10.13
        IMPORTANT: For computers running Mac OS X version 10.13, the DriverLoader_1013 software must be installed before installing the camera software update for each camera that's being updated.
    • This Lens system software update is available for the E-mount body.
      • Some models cannot be used for this update. (model list)
      • This update can only be performed when the remaining battery level has three bars Battery Indicater or more. When performing the System Software update, it's recommended that you use a fully charged NP-FW50 rechargeable battery pack, or the AC-PW20 AC adapter/charger (sold separately).
      • Detach the vertical grip before updating lens system software.
    • USB cable:
      • Use only the USB cable supplied with the camera.
        IMPORTANT: Update functionality is not guaranteed with any other USB cable.
  • To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Download & Install

Download and Update the System Software

  1. Download the Update_SEL55F18ZV2D.dmg file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the Update_SEL55F18ZV2D.dmg file.
  3. On the desktop, double-click the updater icon.
  4. At the Password prompt screen, enter the Name and Password for the administrative account, and then click "OK".

  5. The Lens System Software Updater starts.

  6. Remove the memory card from the camera.
  7. Ensure the lens is attached the camera.
    Note: Please make sure the camera is off before you attach the lens.
  8. Power on the camera.
    Note: If the camera has already been powered on, power it off and then back on again.
  9. On the camera, press the "Menu" button, select "Setup", and then "USB Connection" and ensure "Mass Storage" is selected (this step is not necessary if you are using a QX series camera).

  10. Connect the camera to your computer using the supplied USB cable. If an error message appears on the computer screen, try the following:
    • Disconnect the USB cable and then reconnect it.
    • If another USB port is available on the computer, try connecting the USB cable to another port.
  11. After confirming the steps above, at the Lens System Software Updater window, click "Next".

  12. The camera screen displays the message Follow computer instructions.

    Notes:

    WARNING!: Do not power off the camera or disconnect the USB cable until the update process is complete.

  13. When the following screen is displayed, check the version number at the lower left.

    Note: If the current version is "Ver.02", your camera lens does not need this update. Stop the USB connection, click the "Finish" button on the "Lens System Software Updater" screen, power off the camera, briefly remove the battery pack or the AC adaptor, and then power on the camera again.
  14. If the current version is "Ver.01", click "Next".
  15. The following screen is displayed and the progress bar appears while transferring data to the camera (data transfer takes approximately 5 seconds).

    WARNING!: Do not power off the camera or disconnect the USB cable until the update process is complete.
  16. When the data transfer is complete, the following screen is displayed, click "Finish".

  17. The update process starts and the progress bar is displayed on the camera screen. This process takes approximately 30 seconds to complete.

  18. The update process is finished when the "Lens update complete." message is displayed on the camera screen.
    If you are using the QX series, the update process is finished when the message disappears from the camera screen.

  19. Stop the USB connection, disconnect the USB cable, power off the camera, and then remove the battery pack or AC adapter.
  20. Reconnect the battery pack or AC adapter and power on the camera.
  21. Press the Menu button.
  22. At the "Menu" screen, select "Setup".
  23. At the "Setup" screen, select "Version".
  24. The System Software version is displayed on the LCD screen.

    If the current version is Ver.02, the update was successful.
    Note: If the System Software version number is not Ver.02, please download and install the update again.
