Benefits and improvements
This utility updates the ILCE-7R camera firmware to version 3.20 and provides the following benefits:
Improvements over version 3.10:
- Provides new lens support (SEL70200GM)
- Improves stability of operation when using telephoto lenses such as SEL70200GM and SEL20TC
Benefits provided by previous updates and included in version 3.10:
- New lenses are supported. Note: Please refer to the latest compatibility information on the Web.
- The lens name will be correctly recorded in the EXIF
- The AF can be used in movie recording mode with the SEL85F14GM
- The startup time is shortened
- Improves camera function and provides picture improvement for the new lenses (SEL35F14Z, SEL24240, SEL28F20, SEL90M28G)
- Improves the power-on time after downloading the Smart Remote Control application of the PlayMemories Camera Apps™
- Provides support for the SEL70200G lens:
- Supports the Fast Hybrid AF function and future Fast Hybrid AF compatible E mount lenses
- Adds the Focus hold button function
- Reduces start-up time: The start-up time has been reduced in cases when the camera is switched on immediately after being switched off
- Improves image quality
- Provides support for additional PlayMemories Camera Apps and additional features for previously supported apps:
- Supports the Liveview Grading and Smooth Reflection applications
- Supports the smooth automatic exposure feature in the Time-lapse application ver. 2.00 and later

Before You Start
Determine if Your Camera Needs the Update
This update only applies to ILCE-7R cameras that currently have a firmware version 3.10 or earlier. If your camera firmware version is already version 3.20, this update is not necessary.
Check the version of your camera firmware:
- Power on the camera.
- Press the Menu button.
- At the Menu screen, use the Control Wheel to select Setup, and then press the center button of the Control Wheel.
- At the Setup screen, use the Control Wheel to scroll to Version, and then press the center button of the Control Wheel.
- The firmware version is displayed on the LCD screen. Note: If the current firmware version is 3.20 or higher, the camera does not need this update.
- Press the center button of the Control Wheel to close the version number display.
Important Notes
- WARNING: This Digital Camera firmware update and any changes incurred by it are permanent. It is not possible to return to a previous firmware version after updating this firmware. By continuing this update process and downloading and updating this firmware, you acknowledge that you are aware and understand that this update cannot be reversed.
- WARNING: Do not choose About This System Software Updater from the SystemSoftwareUpdater menu. Doing so may cause the updater software to crash, especially while updating.
- IMPORTANT: Do not allow the computer to enter Sleep (Standby) mode during the update process. To change your settings, please refer to your computer manual or consult the manufacturer.
- This update process requires the following items for proper updating:
- A computer with:
- CPU: Intel® processor (Core Solo™ and Core Duo processors are no longer supported)
- Available Hard Disk Space: 300 MB or more
- Installed Memory (RAM): 512 MB or more
- A USB port
- Apple® Mac OS X® version 10.9 - 10.13 IMPORTANT: For computers running Mac OS X version 10.13, the DriverLoader_1013 software must be installed before installing the camera software update for each camera that's being updated.
- Camera power supply:
- When performing the firmware update, use a fully charged NP-FW50 rechargeable battery pack, or the AC-PW20 AC adapter/charger (sold separately).

WARNING: The camera may not operate properly if the power is interrupted during the update.
- USB cable:
- Use only the USB cable supplied with the camera. Note: Update functionality is not guaranteed with any other USB cable.
- Use only the USB cable supplied with the camera.
- A computer with:
- To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs.
- It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.
Prepare the Camera for the Firmware Update
- Remove the memory card from the camera.
- Power on the camera.
- Press the Menu button.
- At the Menu screen, use the Control Wheel to select Setup, and then press the center button of the Control Wheel.
- At the Setup screen, use the Control Wheel to scroll to USB Connection and verify that Mass Storage is selected.

Download and Update the Firmware

WARNING: Do not choose About This System Software Updater from the SystemSoftwareUpdater menu. Doing so may cause the updater software to crash, especially while updating.
IMPORTANT: Do not allow the computer to enter Sleep (Standby) mode during the update process. To change your settings, please refer to your computer manual or consult the manufacturer.
- Download the Update_ILCE7RV320.dmg file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
- Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the Update_ILCE7RV320.dmg file.

Note: Do not connect the camera to the computer at this time.
- On the desktop, double-click the Update_ILCE7RV320 icon.
- Double-click the Firmware Updater icon.
- At the Password prompt screen, enter the Name and Password for the administrative account, and then click OK.
- Connect the camera to your computer using the supplied USB cable. Note: The LCD screen on the camera will turn off when it is connected to the computer.If the LCD screen of camera does not turn off, please try the following:
- Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to the camera.
- If the computer has additional USB ports, try connecting the USB cable to different USB port.
- At the Firmware Updater screen, click Next.

WARNING: Do not power off the camera or disconnect the USB cable until the update process is complete.
- When the updater recognizes the camera connection, the message Follow computer instructions is displayed on the camera screen.
- At the Firmware Updater screen, click Next.
- When the next screen is displayed, check the version number at the lower left. Note: If the current version is Ver.3.20, your camera does not need this update. Stop the USB connection, disconnect the camera, and click Finish. Then power off the camera, briefly remove the battery or disconnect the AC adaptor, and then power on the camera again.If the current version is Ver.3.10 or earlier, click Next to continue.
- When the next screen is displayed, the camera displays the message Resets device, press the center button of the Control Wheel to reset the camera. Note: The screen turns off when the center of the control wheel is pressed. Please proceed to the next step.
- At the Firmware Updater screen, click Next.
- After resetting, reconnection of the camera is verified, and the next Firmware Updater screen is displayed, click Run. Note: The progress bar appears while updating (approximately 15 minutes).

WARNING: Do not power off the camera or disconnect the USB cable until the update process is complete.
- When the update has completed, the camera will automatically restart. This restart may take a few minutes, make sure to wait for the camera screen to power back on before you continue. Once the camera screen is back on, click Finish.

Note: After automatically restarting, the message Recovering data. Please wait... may appear on the camera screen.
IMPORTANT: Please do not disconnect USB cable while the message is displayed. After finishing recovering data and completing the update, the camera may automatically power off.
- Disconnect the USB cable.
Check the Firmware Version After Updating (optional)
- Power on the camera.
- Press the Menu button.
- At the Menu screen, use the Control Wheel to select Setup, and then press the center button of the Control Wheel.
- At the Setup screen, use the Control Wheel to scroll to Version, and then press the center button of the Control Wheel.
- The firmware version is displayed on the LCD screen.
- If the current firmware version is 3.20, the firmware update was successful. Note: If the firmware version number is not 3.20, please download and install the firmware update again.
- Press the center button of the Control Wheel to close the version number display.
