Benefits and improvements
This utility installs an update to the firmware for the Digital Media Player and provides the following changes and benefits:
Improvements over version 12:
- Enables native DSD 11.2MHz/1bit playback with Android smartphones, and DSD 5.6MHz/1bit playback with iPhones, in the Sony | Music Center app. Note: A smartphone is required for native DSD playback.
- Adds USB DAC output function capabilities to the Sony | Music Center app

Before You Start
Determine if you need this update
- Turn on the Digital Media Player.
- Press and hold the SOURCE button (SRC is printed on the button) for 1 second to turn the source off and display the clock.
- On the Remote Control, press the MENU button.
- On the Remote Control, press the up or down arrow buttons until GENERAL is displayed, and then press the ENTER button.
- On the Remote Control, press the up or down arrow buttons until FIRMWARE is displayed, and then press the ENTER button.
- On the Remote Control, press the up or down arrow buttons until FW VERSION is displayed, and then press the ENTER button.
- If the version is 13, you do not need to update the firmware.
Before You Start
- Follow the update instructions carefully.
- This update requires a computer with an Internet connection and a USB storage device.
- The Remote Control (RM-X261) will be required to perform the firmware update.
- This update procedure (in your car or boat) takes approximately 5 minutes to complete.
- If the AUTO OFF setting was used before updating the firmware, you will need to reset the AUTO OFF setting again after completing the update.
- If you used the PARENTAL setting of SiriusXM before updating the firmware, you will need to reset the PARENTAL pass code again after completing the update.
- The user settings, including preset memory on the tuner and all sound settings, will remain after installing this update, but the Bluetooth connection history will be cleared.
- WARNING!
- To prevent the battery voltage from becoming too low during the update process, it is recommended to perform this update with the car (or boat) engine running. Before starting the update process with the car (or boat) engine running, be sure to park the vehicle in a safe place and keep the engine running until the update is complete. This update takes approximately 5 minutes to complete.
- Failure to follow the instructions, or an interruption in the update process, may cause the player to become unresponsive or to require repair.

Installation Instructions
STEP 1. Download and transfer the Update Files to Your USB Storage Device
- Ensure your computer is connected to the Internet.
- Connect a compatible USB storage device to your computer. Note:The USB storage device must be formatted for FAT16 or FAT32 file systems.
- Download the RSXGS9_v13.zip file to a temporary or download directory, and make note of this directory for reference.
- Open the temporary or download directory in which you just downloaded the update, right click the RSXGS9_v13.zip file, and then click Extract all.
- In the Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders screen, make sure the box next to Show extracted files when complete is checkmarked, then click the Extract button.
- In the RSXGS9_v13 folder that opens, copy the UPDATE folder to the USB storage device:
- For Microsoft® Windows® operating systems: Right-click the UPDATE folder, from the menu click Send To..., and then click the drive (EX: Removable Disk E:) that represents your USB storage device. The folder will be copied onto your USB storage device.
- For Apple® Mac OS X® operating systems: Drag and drop the UPDATE folder to the root directory of the USB device.
Note:This update will not be performed if the UPDATE folder is not copied to the root directory of the USB storage device or if the name of the folder is modified. - Remove the USB storage device from your computer.
- Continue to the next section.
STEP 2. Perform the Firmware Update
- Turn on the Digital Media Player.
- Press and hold the SOURCE button (SRC is printed on the button) for 1 second.
- On the Remote Control, press the MENU button.
- On the Remote Control, press the up or down arrow buttons until GENERAL is displayed, and then press the ENTER button.
- On the Remote Control, press the up or down arrow buttons until FIRMWARE is displayed, and then press the ENTER button.
- On the Remote Control, press the up or down arrow buttons until UPDATE is displayed, and then press the ENTER button.
- On the Remote Control, press the up or down arrow buttons until YES is displayed, and then press the ENTER button.
- When the message Insert USB is displayed, connect the USB storage device to the USB1 port on the front panel of the main unit. IMPORTANT: The USB update function will only work with the USB storage device connected to the USB1 port on the front panel.
- The update process will begin and should finish in approximately 5 minutes. Note:When the Update is finished, the unit will restart automatically.
- Check the current firmware version to confirm that the update has successfully installed.
- If the version number is 13, the firmware update was successful.
- If the version number isn't 13, delete the RSXGS9_v13.zip folder from the USB storage device (or use a different USB device) and then download and install the update again.
