Can a universal remote control be programmed to operate a Blu-ray Disc player?

The DVD button on recently-manufactured Sony® universal remote controls can be programmed to control Blu-ray Disc® players. It may be possible to use this same button on non-Sony remote controls as well. However, this option does not work for universal remote controls manufactured before 2003 - the year Blu-ray Disc players were first introduced.

Another option is to use a universal remote control that has a learning function. Universal remote controls with a learning function have the capability of learning the infrared (IR) frequencies of a remote control.
