How to troubleshoot conflicts in the SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI files.

    Follow this procedure to troubleshoot SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI files.

    1. Click the Start button, then click Run.
    2. In the Run window, next to Open:, type msconfig.
    3. Click the OK button.
    4. In the System Configuration Utility window, on the General tab, in the Startup Selection box, click to select Selective Startup.
    5. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Process System.ini file box.
    6. Click to clear the Process Win.ini file box.
    7. Click the OK button.
    8. In the System Configuration dialog box, click the Restart button.

      NOTE: If other users are currently logged into the computer, a warning will appear that they may lose data if the computer is shut down. To restart the computer, in the Windows dialog box, click the Yes button.

    9. Try to recreate the issue.
    10. If the issue is resolved, identify the line in the WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI file causing the error.
