Windows 8.1 Update FAQ.
In order to install the latest Windows® 8.1 Update, there are two prerequisites:
- The computer must have the Windows 8.1 operating system installed.
NOTE: If you are not running Windows 8.1, please update to Windows 8.1.
- The Windows 8.1 Servicing Stack Update must be installed. The servicing stack component handles the installation and removal of software updates and resolves the issue if there are any unexpected shut downs or crashes during the Windows 8.1 Update installation process.
NOTES:
- If the Windows Update utility is set to automatically download updates, the Windows 8.1 Servicing Stack Update will be downloaded and installed automatically.
- If the Windows Update utility is not set to automatically download updates, the Windows 8.1 Servicing Stack Update can be installed by manually forcing the utility to search for it, or by accessing the update from the Microsoft support website.
Once both of the prerequisites have been met, and once the update has been made available from Microsoft, the Windows 8.1 Update will be automatically installed via the Windows Update utility.
NOTE: If the Windows Update utility is not set to automatically download updates, the update can be installed by manually forcing the utility to search for it, or by accessing the update from the Microsoft support website.
