How to perform a clean boot.
To eliminate software conflicts, follow the steps below to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot an issue or issues.
NOTE: When you perform a clean boot, you may temporarily lose some functionality.
- Point to (but do not click) the lower-right or top-right corner of the screen, and then click to select the Search charm.
NOTE: The Windows Logo + Q key combination will also take you to the Search screen.
- In the Search screen, in the Search field type MSCONFIG, and then press the Enter key.
- In the System Configuration window, click the Services tab.
- On the Services tab, click to place a check in the check box next to Hide all Microsoft services, and then click the Disable all button.
- In the System Configuration window, click the Startup tab.
- On the Startup tab, click Open Task Manager.
- In the Task Manager window, click each Startup item in turn, and then click the Disable button.
- Once all Startup items have been disabled, click the X in the upper-right corner to close the Task Manager window.
- On the System Configuration screen, click OK, and then restart the computer.
Once the troubleshooting has been completed, to reset the computer to start as usual, perform these steps:
- Point to (but do not click) the lower-right or top-right corner of the screen, and then click to select the Search charm.
- In the Search screen, in the Search field type MSCONFIG, and then press the Enter key.
- In the System Configuration window, on the General tab, click the Normal Startup option.
- Click the Services tab, click to remove the check from the next to Hide all Microsoft services, and then click Enable all.
- In the System Configuration window, click the Startup tab.
- On the Startup tab, click Open Task Manager.
- In the Task Manager window, enable all of your startup programs.
- Once all Startup items have been enabled, click the X in the upper-right corner to close the Task Manager window.
- On the System Configuration screen, click OK.
- When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.
