How to use the Windows Easy Transfer feature to transfer files and settings using an external hard drive or USB flash drive.

    1. Connect a USB flash drive or external hard drive to the new computer.
    2. In the Which computer are you using now? window, click to select This is my new computer.
    3. In the Has Windows Easy Transfer already saved your files from your old computer... window, click to select No.
    4. In the Do you need to install Windows Easy Transfer on your old computer? window, click to select I need to install it now.

      NOTES:

      • If you already installed Windows Easy Transfer on the old computer that is running the Windows® XP or Windows Vista® operating system, click I already installed it on my old computer, go to the old computer, open Windows Easy Transfer and then skip to step 10.
      • If the old computer is running the Windows 7 operating system, click My old computer is running Windows 7, go to the old computer, open Windows Easy Transfer and then skip to step 10.

    5. In the How do you want to install Windows Easy Transfer on you old computer? window, click External hard disk or USB flash drive depending on the device you are using.
    6. In the Browse For Folder window, browse to and click to select the drive or folder where you like to save the file.

      NOTE: The Windows Easy Transfer installation files will be copied to the drive.

    7. Remove the USB flash drive or external hard disk from the new computer and connect it to the old computer.

      NOTE: If Windows Easy Transfer starts automatically, skip the next step.

    8. On the old computer, open the folder or drive where the Windows Easy Transfer file was saved and then double-click Windows Easy Transfer.

      NOTES:

      • If prompted for an administrator password or a User Account Control prompt is displayed, type the appropriate password, click Continue or click Yes.
      • You may be prompted to install the latest service pack update. If you are using the Windows Vista operating system, follow Microsoft KB Article ID 935791. If you are using the Windows XP operating system, follow Microsoft KB Article ID 322389.

    9. In the Windows Easy Transfer window, click the Next button.
    10. In the What do you want to use to transfer items to your new computer? window, click An external hard disk or USB flash drive.
    11. In the Which computer are you using now? window, click This is my old computer.

      NOTE: Windows Easy Transfer will check the computer to determine what files can be transferred.

    12. In the Choose what to transfer from this computer window, choose the desired files and folders you would like to transfer.

      The following transfer options are available:

      • To select by user, click the checkbox next to a user account to select or remove it and then click the Next button. Image
      • To select by file categories, use the following procedure:
        1. Under the desired user account, click Customize.
        2. Click the checkbox next to a file category to select or remove it.
        3. Close the file categories pop-up window and then click the Next button.

      • To select by individual files and folders, use the following procedure:
        1. Under the desired user account, click Customize.
        2. In the file categories pop-up window, click Advanced.
        3. In the Modify your selections window, click the checkbox next to a file or folder to select of remove it.
        4. Click the Save button and then click the Next button.

    13. In the Save your files and settings for transfer window, if desired, enter a password in the Password field and then click the Save button.
    14. In the Save for Easy Transfer file window, browse to the USB flash driver or external hard drive, and then click the Save button.

      NOTE: The default file name is Windows Easy Transfer - Items from old computer. You may change it, if desired, but be sure to write down the file name.

    15. In the These files and settings have been saved for your transfer window, click the Next button.
    16. In the Your transfer file is complete window, click the Next button and then click the Close button.
    17. Remove the USB flash drive or external hard drive from the old computer and connect it to the new computer.
    18. On the new computer, click Start, click Computer and open the drive that corresponds to the USB flash drive or external hard drive, locate the file you saved in step 14 and then double-click it.

      NOTE: If you password protected the file, enter the appropriate password and click the Next button.

    19. In the Choose what to transfer to this computer window, click the Transfer button.

      NOTE: You may choose to only transfer selected files, using the same procedure as described in step 12.

    20. In the Your transfer is complete window, to view a report on the files that were transferred, click See what was transferred.

      NOTE: The Program report provides a list of suggested applications you may want to install.

    21. Click the Close button.

    NOTE: If the transferred user account does not exist on the new computer, it will be created and the files and settings are transferred to the appropriate folders under that user account.
