Before You Start

Determine if Your Lens Needs the Update

Check the version of your camera lens System Software:


  1. Attach the lens to the camera.
    Note: Please make sure the camera is off before you attach the lens.
  2. Power on the camera.
  3. Press the Menu button.
  4. At the "Menu" screen, select "Setup".
  5. At the "Setup" screen, select "Version".
  6. The System Software version is displayed on the LCD screen.

    If the current version is Ver.02 or higher, the camera lens does not need this update.

Important Notes

  • This System Software update can be performed only when the lens is attached to a camera. Make sure to power off the camera and attched your lens before performing this update.
    This Lens system software update is available for the E-mount body.
    • Some models cannot be used for this update. (model list)
  • WARNING!: This System Software update and any changes incurred by it are permanent. It is not possible to return to a previous version after updating this System Software. By continuing this update process, downloading and installing this software, you acknowledge that you are aware and understand that this update cannot be reversed.
  • This update process requires the following items for proper updating:
    • A computer with:
      • Available Hard Disk Space: 200 MB or more
      • Installed Memory (RAM): 512 MB or more
      • A USB port.
      • One of the following Microsoft® Windows® operating systems installed:
        • Windows 10
        • Windows 8/8.1
        • Windows 7 (with Service Pack 1)
        • Windows Vista® (with Service Pack 2)
          Note: Starter Edition of Windows Vista is not supported.
    • This Lens system software update is available for the E-mount body.
      • Some models cannot be used for this update. (model list)
      • This update can only be performed when the remaining battery level has three bars Battery Indicater or more. When performing the System Software update, it's recommended that you use a fully charged NP-FW50 rechargeable battery pack, or the AC-PW20 AC adapter/charger (sold separately).
      • Detach the vertical grip before updating lens system software.
    • USB cable:
      • Use only the USB cable supplied with the camera.
        Update functionality is not guaranteed with any other USB cable.
  • To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Download & Install

Download and Update the System Software

  1. Download the Update_SEL55F18ZV2D.exe file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the Update_SEL55F18ZV2D.exe file. The Lens System Software Updater starts.

  3. Remove the memory card from the camera.
  4. Ensure the lens is attached the camera.
    Note: Please make sure the camera is off before you attach the lens.
  5. Power on the camera.
    Note: If the camera has already been powered on, power it off and then back on again.
  6. On the camera, press the "Menu" button, select "Setup", and then "USB Connection" and ensure "Mass Storage" is selected (this step is not necessary if you are using a QX series camera).

  7. Connect the camera to your computer using the supplied USB cable. If an error message appears on the computer screen, try the following:
    • Disconnect the USB cable and then reconnect it.
    • If another USB port is available on the computer, try connecting the USB cable to another port.
  8. Verify that the remove hardware icon Remove Hardware Icon or Remove Hardware Icon is displayed in the task tray at the lower right-hand corner of the computer screen.
  9. After confirming the steps above, at the Lens System Software Updater window, click "Next".

  10. The camera screen displays the message Follow computer instructions.

    Notes:
    • If the message "The update is not available for your model." appears on the screen, verify that the update file is correct for the lens you have attached. If the file is correct, close the Lens System Software Updater program, disconnect the USB cable, power off the camera, and then restart the Lens System Software Updater program and continue the procedure.
    • If the message "Could not find the camera with the lens for this update mounted." appears on the screen, ensure you are using a compatible camera and if the camera is properly connected to the computer. Try disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable or connect to another USB port on the computer.

    WARNING!: Do not power off the camera or disconnect the USB cable until the update process is complete.

  11. When the following screen is displayed, check the version number at the lower left to confirm that the current version is "Ver.01", and then click "Next".

    Note: If the current version is "Ver.02", your camera lens does not need this update. Stop the USB connection by clicking the remove hardware icon Remove Hardware Icon or Remove Hardware Icon in the task tray in the lower right corner of the computer screen. Then disconnect USB cable from the camera and click the "Finish" button on the "Lens System Software Updater" screen. Power off the camera, briefly remove the battery pack or the AC adaptor, and then power on the camera again.
  12. The following screen is displayed and the progress bar appears while transferring data to the camera (data transfer takes approximately 5 seconds).

    WARNING!: Do not power off the camera or disconnect the USB cable until the update process is complete.
  13. When the data transfer is complete, the following screen is displayed, click "Finish".

  14. The update process starts and the progress bar is displayed on the camera screen. This process takes approximately 30 seconds to complete.

  15. The update process is finished when the "Lens update complete." message is displayed on the camera screen.
    If you are using the QX series, the update process is finished when the message disappears from the camera screen.

  16. Stop the USB connection by clicking the remove hardware icon Remove Hardware Icon or Remove Hardware Icon in the task tray in the lower right corner of the computer screen. If the icons are not present in the task tray, please proceed to the next step.
  17. Disconnect the USB cable, power off the camera, and then remove the battery pack or AC adapter.
  18. Reconnect the battery pack or AC adapter and power on the camera.

Check the System Software Version After Updating (optional)

  1. Power on the camera.
  2. Press the Menu button.
  3. At the "Menu" screen, select "Setup".
  4. At the "Setup" screen, select "Version".
  5. The System Software version is displayed on the LCD screen.

  6. If the current version is Ver.02, the update was successful.
    Note: If the System Software version number is not Ver.02, please download and install the update again.
