What is App Standby in Android 6.0 or higher and can I adjust it?

    Information

App Standby preserves battery life by suspending the background network activity of unused applications. Phone calls and text messaging (SMS) are not affected.

App Standby considers an app as idle if:

    • The app has not been used for more than 2 days.
    • The app has not shown a notification for more than 12 hours.

    Solution

Note: This feature is enabled by default and is recommended for best battery performance. You can, however, make exceptions for certain applications.

    To make exceptions from optimization

    • Android 8.0 or 9.0

    1. Find and tap Settings Battery.

    2. Tap the menu button (three vertical dots) and select Power-saving exceptions. A list appears showing applications that are not optimised.

    3. To add apps to this list, swipe to the APPS tab.

    4. To add an app, tap it to mark its checkbox. This exempts the app from being affected by App Standby and, where available, Doze mode and STAMINA mode.

    • Android 6.0.1 or 7.x

    1. From your Home screen, tap the Application screen icon.

    2. Find and tap Settings Battery.

    3. Tap the menu button (three vertical dots) and select Battery optimization. A list appears showing applications that are not optimised.

    4. To add apps to this list, swipe to the APPS tab.

    5. To add an app, tap it to mark its checkbox. This exempts the app from being affected by App Standby and, where available, Doze mode and STAMINA mode.
