If your device’s battery life seems poor or shorter than it used to be, a downloaded app could be using too much battery. To troubleshoot battery drain issues, try the actions below.
Check your apps
If your battery is draining faster than in the past, you can check whether apps are using too much battery. You can then choose to force stop or uninstall these apps.
- Restrict background battery usage for battery consuming apps.
- Restrict background battery usage for apps with high overall battery use.
- Restrict background battery usage for any app.
- Disable background mobile and wireless data for an app.
- Apply the Power-saving feature for excepted apps.
- Check for app updates.
- Force an app to stop.
- Disable or uninstall apps that you don’t use.
Check your device
If no app is draining the battery, try these steps. They can fix issues that could drain battery in the background.
- Restart your device.

Detailed instructions
To restrict background battery usage for battery consuming apps
- Find and tap Settings → Battery → menu icon (three vertical dots) → Consuming apps.
- In the list of consuming apps, tap an app and then tap RESTRICT.
To restrict background battery usage for apps with high overall battery use
- Find and tap Settings → Battery → Advanced.
- In the list of apps, tap an app and then tap Background restriction (if the option is available).
- Tap RESTRICT.
To restrict background battery usage for any app
- Find and tap Settings → Apps & notifications → See all [number of apps] apps.
- Find and tap the relevant app.
- Tap Advanced → Battery → Background restriction (if the option is available).
- Tap RESTRICT.
To disable background mobile and wireless data for an app
- Find and tap Settings → Apps & notifications → See all [number of apps] apps.
- Find and tap the relevant app.
- Tap Data usage.
- Tap the switch beside Background data to disable background mobile data usage.
To apply the Power-saving feature for an excepted app
- Find and tap Settings → Battery → menu icon (three vertical dots → Power-saving exceptions.
- If prompted, tap OK.
- Tap the EXCEPTIONS tab.
- Unmark the checkbox beside the relevant app to apply the Power-saving feature.
To check for app updates
- Find and tap Play Store → menu icon (three horizontal lines) → My apps & games.
- If an update is available, tap UPDATE.
- If several updates are available, tap UPDATE ALL.
To force an app to stop
- Find and tap Settings → Apps & notifications → See all [number of apps] apps.
- Find and tap the relevant app.
- Tap FORCE STOP.
To disable or uninstall an app

- Tap DISABLE or UNINSTALL.
To restart your device

To check for a software update wirelessly
- If you are using a device with multiple users, make sure you are logged in as the owner.
- Make sure your device is connected to the internet. It is recommended to use a Wi-Fi network instead of a mobile network to download new software so that you can avoid data traffic costs.
- Find and tap Settings → System → Advanced → Software update → SYSTEM.
- If a system update is available, tap UPDATE.
- When the update is installed, tap RESTART.
To perform a factory data reset
- Find and tap Settings → System → Advanced → Reset options → Erase all data (factory reset) → RESET PHONE.
- If required, draw your screen unlock pattern or enter your screen unlock password or PIN to continue.
- Tap ERASE EVERYTHING.
Note: When you perform a factory data reset, you erase all personal data stored on the internal storage of your Xperia device. Make sure that you always back up data stored on the internal storage that you want to keep before performing a factory data reset. Photos, videos, music and documents stored on the SD card do not get erased during a factory data reset.
