How to enable the webcam gesture control feature in the VAIO Media Gallery software.

IMPORTANT: Use of the webcam Gesture Control feature within the VAIO® Media Gallery software is only supported on VAIO computers released in the Fall of 2010 or later. VAIO computers released before the Fall of 2010 do not have the hardware and software required to allow the Gesture Control feature to be enabled within the Media Gallery software.

Follow these steps to enable the Gesture Control feature in the VAIO Media Gallery software.

    IMPORTANT:

    • Before beginning this procedure, if your computer was released prior to March 2011, download and install the VAIO Media Gallery 1.4 software update.
    • Computers released after March 2011 will already have the VAIO Media Gallery 1.4 software installed. Downloads are posted on your model support page.
    1. Click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click Media Gallery.
    2. In the Media Gallery window, on the menu bar, click the Tools button. Image
    3. On the Tools menu, click Settings (S). Image

    5. On the Now Playing tab, in the Gesture control settings section, click to place a check in the boxes next to Use gesture controls and Display notification when the camera detects hand gestures. Image

NOTE: There are other options and settings that can be accessed and set from within the Gesture control settings section:

      • Camera sensitivity: This allows you to move the slider bar to make the camera more or less sensitive to your hand movements.
      • Next / Previous gesture: Click the desired option to define which direction to move your hand.
      • Gesture movement speed: This allows you to move the slider bar to define the speed at which your hand movements affect the screen operations.
      • For additional help and information regarding the Gesture Control feature, click the About gesture controls link.
    6. In the Media Gallery Settings window, once all the desired gesture control settings have been set or changed, click the OK button.
    7. In the Media Gallery window, click the X in the upper-right corner to close the window.
    8. Restart the computer.
    9. Click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click Media Gallery.

NOTE: When you start the Media Gallery software, the lamp of the built-in camera will light up to indicate the gesture controls are activated.

    10. In the Media Gallery Settings window, click either the Photo & Video, Music, or Internet Content tab.
    11. On the selected tab, double-click a picture, piece of music or video to begin playing that content.
    12. You will now be able control the media play, stop, forward or previous functions with gestures by moving your hand up or down, right or left.

IMPORTANT: Gesture controls may not work properly in any of the following cases:

      • If someone or something is moving in the background
      • If the computer is on an unstable surface
      • If you are using your computer in the dark
      • If the gestures are not performed in front of the camera
      • If you are moving your hand too fast
      • If bright images, such as florescent light or camera flashes, are present near the camera.

NOTE: If the gesture controls do not work properly, take your hand away from the camera and wait for a moment, and then try the gestures again.
