Unable to connect to a wireless router configured for the 5 GHz frequency.

If you are using a VAIO® computer with a wireless LAN adapter that only supports the 2.4 GHz frequency, then it may not detect and properly connect to a WLAN router that is configured for the 5 GHz frequency. Issues may include dropped connections, slow speeds or limited connectivity.

The issue may be resolved using the following information:

• Download and install the latest driver update for the WLAN adapter. Downloads are posted on your model support page.
• Install the latest firmware update for the router.

  WARNING: If you configure your router only for the 2.4 GHz frequency, Wi-Fi® devices that use only the 5 GHz frequency will not be able to connect.

• Configure the router to only use the 2.4 GHz band.

  NOTE: For information about updating the firmware or configuring the frequency of your router, refer to the documentation of the router or contact the manufacturer.

The following WLAN adapters, as well as some others, only support the 2.4 GHz band.

• Atheros® LAN Express AS IEEE 802.11g PCI-E adapter 2.4 GHz (802.11b/g)
• Atheros AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (802.11b/g/n)
• Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (802.11b/g/n)

NOTE: To see if your computer has one of the WLAN adapters listed above or any other WLAN adapter that only supports the 2.4 GHz frequency, check the specifications. Manuals are posted on your model support page.

For newer computers that came with the Smart Network tool:

1. Click Start.
2. Click All Programs.
3. Locate and click VAIO Smart Network.
4. Click Settings.

   

5. Click Wi-Fi.
6. Make sure Wi-Fi Settings Mode is set to 2.4GHZ and 5GHz.

   

7. Click Apply, then OK.
