How to customize and use the Windows Update feature.

    The Windows Update feature of the operating system helps keep your computer safe and your software current by retrieving the latest security, software, app and feature updates for the Microsoft® products via the Internet.

    Follow these steps to customize and use the Windows Update feature.

    IMPORTANT: Windows Update can no longer be accessed from the Control Panel.

    1. Click the Start button, and in the Start menu, click Settings.

      NOTE: The Windows Logo + I key combination will also take you to the Settings screen.

    2. In the Settings window, click Update & security.

    3. On the UPDATE & SECURITY screen, if any updates are available they will be listed and several options regarding that update will be available:

      • Click the Restart now button to restart and install all available updates immediately.
      • If you would like the restart and update installation to happen later, click to select We'll schedule a restart during a time you usually don't use our device... option.
      • If you would like to reschedule the restart and update installation for another time or date, click the Select a restart time option and then set the desired time and day for the restart and update installation.
    4. On the bottom of the UPDATE & SECURITY screen, click Advanced options.

    5. In the ADVANCED OPTIONS screen, under Choose how updates are installed, click the down arrow and then click to select the desired option: Automatically (recommended) or Notify to schedule restart.

    6. Click the box next to Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows. to look for updates for other Microsoft products, such as Microsoft Word and Excel, whenever Windows Update searches for operating system updates.

    7. Click the box next to Defer upgrades to keep upgrades and updates from being installed.

      NOTES:

      • Deferring upgrades will prevent you from getting the latest features of the operating system as soon as they are available.
      • Deferring upgrades does not affect security updates.
    8. Click View your update history to see a list of updates of the updates installed on computer.

      NOTES:

      • To see a brief description about any specific update, under the desired update title, click the Successfully installed on [date] link.

      • To uninstall an update, which is not recommended unless there are problems clearly identified by the Microsoft company or computer experts as pertaining to that update, click Uninstall updates and then follow the on-screen instructions.
    9. Click Choose how update are delivered to allow the computer to receive updates from other computers in addition to the Microsoft software.

      NOTE: Turning this feature on can help apps and updates download faster.
