Can 64-bit software be used, or a 64-bit operating system be installed on any computer regardless of the processor, motherboard or other hardware component or device?
A 64-bit processor (CPU) is required for the installation of any 64-bit operating system on any computer. From there, a 64-bit operating system is required to install and use any 64-bit software. The CPU is the only component that is required to be 64-bit certified. The motherboard and all other hardware components or devices need only be compatible with the CPU. Most current-generation motherboards will work with Dual-Core 32-bit Intel or 64-bit Intel and AMD processors, and hardware components or devices will list processor and operating system requirements and limitations in their Users Guide, Operating Instructions or Marketing Specifications documentation.
NOTE: In order for an installed or connected hardware component or device to work properly on a computer with a 64-bit processor and 64-bit operating system, that component or device will need to have the appropriate 64-bit driver software installed. If the appropriate 64-bit driver software did not come with the hardware, that software can typically be downloaded from the hardware manufacturer Web site.
