The audio skips or is distorted when playing a CD or DVD disc.

When playing a CD or DVD disc, if the audio starts skipping or the sound is full of static and/or distortion, there may be a problem with the disc or the unit may be dirty. Follow these steps to try to resolve this issue.

    IMPORTANT:

    • Sony cannot guarantee proper playback when using burned discs (CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+Rs) created by a CD or DVD burner. Make sure to use a commercially-produced, store-bought disc when doing the troubleshooting steps.
    • Because each of these steps represents a possible solution to this issue, check the sound after completing each step.
    • If model-specific information is needed to complete any of these steps, refer to the instructions supplied with the product. Manuals are posted on your model support page.
    1. Remove the disc from the player.
    2. Clean the disc using a soft, dry cloth.

WARNING: There is a risk of data loss. Do not use solvents such as benzene, thinner, commercially-available cleaners, or antistatic spray intended for vinyl records. These products can damage the disc.

NOTE: Fingerprints or dust on the disc may cause poor sound reproduction or audio dropout.

    3. Handling the disc by its edge and not touching the surface, reinsert the disc, then press the PLAY button.

NOTE: For players with the ESP™ feature or G-Protection® technology, make sure that these features are activated.

    4. If the issue is not resolved, remove the disc from the player.
    5. Attempt to play a different store-bought disc in the player.

NOTE: If the issue does not occur when playing the newly-inserted disc, the previous disc was the issue. If the issue is still not resolved, proceed to the next step.

    6. If possible, attempt to play the discs in another CD or DVD player to verify whether the discs have the issue or if the problem is with the player.
    7. Move the player away from any electrical devices that may be operating nearby.

NOTE: Recordings may have static or distortion if the player is placed too close to another electrical device or is too close to an object having a magnetic field during the recording process.

    8. If the problem persists, disconnect the power source from the player for approximately 30 seconds and then reconnect the power source.

      NOTES:

      • If your unit uses AC power, verify that the power source is securely connected and plugged into a working AC outlet.
      • If your unit uses batteries, make sure that the batteries are fresh and that they are inserted correctly.

The troubleshooting steps listed above should resolve your issue. If you have completed all of the steps and the issue is not resolved, we would recommend bringing the unit in to have the lens professionally cleaned.

NOTE: Use of a commercial lens cleaner or cleaning disc is not recommended.
