Closed Captions are typically transcriptions of the audio portion of content displayed on the TV screen. They include sound effects and scenic narration, but whether non-speech elements are available depends on the content.
Display Closed Captions on the TV screen
The Closed Caption feature is enabled with the remote control using either of the following methods:
- Press the MENU button to access the Control Menu, then select the CC/Subtitle option
- Press the CC (Subtitle) button.
Content for which Closed Captions are available is as follows:
- TV broadcasts: Closed Captions may not be available for some TV broadcasts.
- Apps: Whether a given app supports the Closed Caption feature depends on the app. As of February 2020, Google Play™ Movies & TV does support the Closed Caption feature. Some apps, such as Netflix® streaming services, enable Closed Captions by using their setting menu instead of pressing the TV remote control's CC (Subtitle) button. In addition, some apps can change the text size and color.

Customizing the Closed caption for TV broadcast
For Google TV™
- On the remote control, press the (Quick Settings) button.
- Select Settings and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select System, and press the Enter button.
- Select Accessibility and press the Enter button.
- Select Captions and press the Enter button.
- Select Broadcast and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select Captions, and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select Digital CC options, and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select Custom, and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow to select Customize formatting, and press Enter.
- Press the Down arrow button to select the item you want to change from Language, Text size, Character style, Font family, Text color, Text opacity, Edge type, Edge color, Background color, Background opacity, Window color, and Window opacity. Text opacity, Edge color, Background opacity, and Window opacity can be selected after Text color, Edge type, Background color, and Window color are selected.
For Android TV™
- On your TV remote control, press the Home button.
- Select Settings at the upper right corner of the Home screen, and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select BRAVIA Settings, and press the Enter button.
- Select Channel setup and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select Captions, and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select Digital CC options, and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select Custom, and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow to select Customize formatting, and press Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select the item you want to change from Text size, Font family, Text flashing, Text color, Text opacity, Edge type, Edge color, Background flashing, Background color, Background opacity, Window color, and Window opacity. Background flashing, Background color, Background opacity, Window color, and Window opacity can be selected after Show Background and Show window is selected, respectively.
Enabling Closed Captions from the Settings for streaming and other content
For Google TV
- On the remote control, press the (Quick Settings) button.
- Select Settings and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select System, and press the Enter button.
- Select Accessibility, and press the Enter button.
- Select Captions and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select Streaming & other content, and press Enter.
- Select Display and press the Enter button.
For Android TV
- On your TV remote control, press the Home button.
- Select Settings at the upper right corner of the Home screen, and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select Device Preferences, and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select Accessibility, and press the Enter button.
- Select Captions, and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select Streaming & other content, and press Enter.
- Select Display and press the Enter button.
