Closed Captions are typically transcriptions of the audio portion of content displayed on the TV screen. They include sound effects and scenic narration, but whether non-speech elements are available depends on the content.
Display Closed Captions on the TV screen
Press the CC (Subtitle) button on the supplied remote control to enable the Closed Caption (CC) feature. Subtitles are available for the following content:
- TV broadcasts: Closed Captions may not be available for some TV broadcasts.
- Apps: Whether a given app supports the the Closed Caption feature depends on the app. As of June 2019, Google Play™ Movies & TV store does support the Closed Caption feature. Some apps, such as the Netflix® service, enable subtitles by using their own setting menu instead of pressing the CC (Subtitle) button on the TV remote control. In addition, some apps can change the text size and color.

Customize closed captions for TV broadcasts
- On the supplied remote control, press the HOME button.
- Select Settings at the upper right corner of the Home screen and press the Enter button.
Note: For Android 7.0, Select Settings at the lower corner of the Home screen and press the Enter button.
- For Android 9: Press the Down arrow button to select Device Preferences, and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select Accessibility, and press the Enter button.
- Select Captions and press the Enter button.
- Select Cable/Antenna and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select Digital CC options, and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select Custom, and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select the item you want to change from Character size, Character style, Character color, Character opacity, Edge type, Edge color, Background color, Background opacity, Window color, and Window opacity. Character opacity, Edge color, Background opacity, and Window opacity can be selected after Character color, Edge type, Background color, and Window color are selected respectively.
Enable closed captions for streaming & other content
- Press the Home button on your TV remote control.
- Select Settings at the upper right corner of the Home screen and press the Enter button.
Note: For Android 7.0, Select Settings at the lower corner of the Home screen and press the Enter button.
- For Android 9: Press the Down arrow button to select Device Preferences, and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select Accessibility, and press the Enter button.
- Select Captions and press the Enter button.
- Press the Down arrow button to select Streaming & other content, and press the Enter button.
- Select Display and press the Enter button.
Note: You can also change the language, text size, and color of the text in this Captions menu.
