Before You Start

Determine Whether or Not This Firmware Update is Needed for Your Camera

This update only applies for MHS-CM1 Webbie HD™ cameras that currently have a firmware version lower than 1.09. If your camera firmware version is already version 1.09, then this update is not necessary.


How to check your camera's firmware version:

  1. Open the LCD panel to power on the camera.
  2. Power off the camera.
  3. Press and hold down the Image Size/Delete button (Image Size/Delete) button and simultaneously press the ON/OFF (POWER) button to power on the camera.

  4. The current firmware version is displayed briefly in the lower right-hand corner of the LCD. If the version is lower than 1.09, please continue with this update. If the version is 1.09, this update is not necessary.
  5. Close the LCD panel to power off the camera after checking the firmware version number.

Required Items

A computer with:

  • Available Hard Disk Space: 128 MB or more
  • Installed Memory (RAM): 128 MB or more
  • A USB port or a Memory Stick Duo slot.
  • One of the following operating systems installed:
    • Microsoft® Windows Vista® (with Service Pack 1)
    • Microsoft Windows® XP (with Service Pack 3)
      Note: 64-bit versions of Windows XP are not supported.
    • Macintosh® OS X

Camera power supply:

  • When performing the firmware update, use the AC adaptor AC-DL960 (supplied with the camera).
    WARNING!!: The camera may not operate properly if the power is interrupted during the update.

USB cable (if your computer does not have a Memory Stick Duo slot):

  • Use only the USB cable supplied with the camera.
    Note: Update functionality is not guaranteed if you use any other USB cable.

Recording media:

  • Memory Stick Duo or Memory Stick PRO Duo™ media with capacity of 64 MB or more
    Note: The Memory Stick Duo media should be formatted with the camera before using it to perform the update.
    IMPORTANT: Be sure to backup all pictures and data from the Memory Stick Duo media before formatting it.

Important Notes

  • WARNING!!: This update is only for use with the Sony® MHS-CM1 camera. Do not install this update on any other camera.
  • Please make a backup copy or note of the personal settings and data stored in the camera before updating the firmware.
  • Please make a backup copy of images stored in the camera's internal memory before performing the update.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Download the Update and Copy it to Memory Stick Duo Media

  1. Click the "Download Now" link at the top or bottom of this page.
  2. At the "Software Agreement" dialog, read the agreement, then, if you agree, click "Accept Agree" to continue with the download.
  3. Download the MHS-CM1.zip file to a temporary or download folder (please note this folder for reference).
  4. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the MHS-CM1.zip file to extract the SDV5590S.bin update file.
    Notes:
    • By default the SDV5590S.bin file is extracted to the same folder as the MHS-CM1.zip file.
    • Depending on your computer configuration, the ".bin" file extension may not be displayed.
    • The SDV5590S.bin file is the software update file for the camera. Please follow the steps below to install the software to the camera. Do not double-click the SDV5590S.bin file.
  5. Prepare the Memory Stick Duo media for the update by formatting it with the camera.
    IMPORTANT: The recording media must be formatted in the camera. All data on the recording media, including even protected images, will be erased by formatting and cannot be restored. Be sure to backup all pictures and data from the Memory Stick Duo media before formatting it.
  6. Copy the SDV5590S.bin update file to the Memory Stick Duo media using one of the methods below.
    • If your computer has a Memory Stick Duo slot:
      1. If Picture Motion Browser is installed in the computer, right-click the "PMB Media Check Tool" icon in the task tray and select "Exit".
      2. Insert the Memory Stick Duo media you formatted with the camera into the Memory Stick Duo slot of your computer.
        Note: When you insert the Memory Stick Duo media into the slot some windows may open. Close any windows that open.
      3. Copy the SDV5590S.bin update file to the Memory Stick Duo media.
    • If your computer does not have a Memory Stick Duo slot:
      1. Insert the formatted Memory Stick Duo media into the camera.
      2. Connect the AC Adaptor (supplied) to the camera.
      3. Open the LCD panel to power on the camera.
      4. If Picture Motion Browser is installed in the computer, right-click the "PMB Media Check Tool" icon in the task tray and select "Exit".
      5. Connect the camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable.

        Note: When you connect the camera some windows may open. Close any windows that open.
      6. When the camera displays "USB Mode Web Camera", please follow the procedure below to set the USB mode to "Mass Storage":
        1. Press the (MENU) button
        2. Press the center of the control button.
        3. Select the "Mass Storage" and then press the center of the control button.
      7. Copy the SDV5590S.bin update file to the Memory Stick Duo media in the camera.
        Note: When you connect the camera to the computer, two or three drives will be found. Please be careful to copy the update file to the Memory Stick Duo media instead of to the internal memory. (The size of the internal memory is about 12 MB.)
      8. When the file has been copied to the Memory Stick Duo media disconnect the USB cable.

Update the Camera Firmware

WARNING!!: While performing the firmware update make sure to supply power to the camera with the AC adaptor AC-DL960 (supplied with the camera), as the camera may not work properly if the power runs out during the update.

  1. Open the LCD panel to power on the camera.
  2. Power off the camera.
  3. Insert the Memory Stick Duo media with the SDV5590S.bin update file into the camera.
  4. Press the ON/OFF (POWER) button while simultaneously sliding and holding the Zoom lever to the "W" side and pressing and holding the Sharemark Button (Sharemark) button.

  5. The camera automatically starts updating.
    WARNING!!: During the update process do not power off the camera or disconnect the AC adaptor. Interrupting the firmware update may cause the camera to function incorrectly.
    Notes:
    • While the update is in progress, the Power lamp (green) flashes.
    • If the Power lamp does not start flashing and the camera powers on normally, the update has failed. Turn off the power with the ON/OFF (POWER) button then return to step 1 of this section and try again.
    • If the update will not install even though you have tried several times, please return to Download the Update and Copy it to Memory Stick Duo™ Media and try again.
  6. When the power lamp (green) stops flashing and the charge lamp (orange) lights, that means the update process is finished, and the camera will shut down automatically.
    Note: It takes about 20 seconds for the camera to shut down after the update finishes.

Confirm the Successful Update (optional)

  1. Open the LCD panel to power on the camera.
  2. Power off the camera.
  3. Press and hold down the Image Size/Delete button (Image Size/Delete) button and simultaneously press the ON/OFF (POWER) button to power on the camera.

  4. The current firmware version is displayed briefly in the lower right-hand corner of the LCD. If the version is 1.09, the camera firmware has been successfully updated.
  5. Close the LCD panel to power off the camera after checking the firmware version number.
