Awesome except doesn't support iOS8
Body Only 13 October 2014 by gmanjapan (USA)
I really really want to use the WiFi features but apparently the software broke with iOS8. Please update your software Sony! Otherwise so far I love it. I had an RX-100 for 2 years. Just upgraded to the model 3. That in itself is a glowing review because if I didn't like the RX-100 series I wouldn't have been willing to upgrade.
Sony RX1003M A Great Camera if You Have a Ph.D.
Body Only 18 January 2017 by muskturtle (USA) Verified Purchaser Verified
We got this camera in 20150505 and it's currently 20170117. I'm writing to offer this up in hopes it might be of some benefit to those considering one. The operating system for the camera is quite complex. Granted, considering I come from a film background, for years having used a top of the line competitor's camera, I learned about f-stops, shutterspeeds, exposure values and ISO and so a jump into the foray of things digital was, for me the second digital camera we owned. The first was a point and shoot. This camera, the Sony RX1003M is hardly a simple point and shoot. The imaging technology is excellent as would be expected however, the operating system is challenging and hardly intuitive at all. There are many videos on youtube that can be viewed and I suggest watching as many as possible. I suspect other manufacturers have similar problems. It would be useful if Sony had a series of video tutorials on this camera. The camera as I said is excellent for what its capabilities are. But if you want to set up the camera using Manual settings be prepared for let's see, using mathematical combinations 10 modes x 118 Menu Items! Meaning if you factor this out there are 118 menu items possible (not in reality) factorial. So for you mathematicians out there, correct me if I'm wrong, that means (118x10)! different possibilities. Still, all in all the camera is truly amazing considering one eventually begins to grasp its capabilities. The problem is how to set up the camera with the way one wants to make photographs since it has so many wonderful features. The other problem is recalling exactly where everything is in the event one wishes to 'tinker' with things like shutterspeed, ISO, f-stops and so on. For example finding the photographer can set up the 'control ring' which can be set to govern f-stops or aperture and other things is a challenge. Finding that the Menu button brings up icons like the Gear icon and then on page 4 of the Gear icon, finding Custom Key settings and then clicking on Shutter Speed gives the photographer the option to select it, or Aperture or Creative Style (I thought Creativity was in the eye of the photographer). But given the complexity of choices and how much is possible with this camera at best it is a challenge for users to remember all it is capable of doing. Clearly the developers are attempting to appeal to as many markets as possible. It should appeal to those who are familiar with the Sony product line and also to very advanced digital photographers. All in all this is an excellent camera. The technology is first rate. The camera feels solid and seems responsive and yet it is light and appealing to me and would seem the ideal camera to carry around. It's WiFi abilities are amazing. But again, this requires considerable tinkering once the cell phone operating system is aligned with its Sony Play Memories software, which can be put on the phone, desktop or tablet in accordance with the operating system. My experience was with the Android system on the HTC 626 Desire Cell Phone. The ability to turn the phone into a WiFi hot spot the phone can recognize was somewhat challenging but do-able. The camera's logic seems convoluted and deviates from historical film photography with its many nuances. It is a great camera if you need one to carry around with great still and movie capabilities. Just be prepared to spend a lot of time learning your way around the ropes. Perhaps upwards of 1000 hours. At least that was my experience. And consider this. My view is based on my experience as an amateur. Pros no doubt will have their opinions. Considering all the work that went into its design and production, the quality of the electronics and the legendary quality of the Zeiss lens and the machining involved, it is a first rate camera.

Good but old version
Body Only 04 October 2024 by JohnRW (United Kingdom)
The latest version is the Mk7 which was launched in 2019, which makes this little camera a lot behind the curve. The biggest difference with the Mk3 is the zoom and the screen, both considerably better in the Mk7. The Mk3 is however a superb little camera with most of the features and spec of the Mk7, but at a VERY much lower cost.

I bought this as I wanted a good compact camera for an upcoming trip. Image quality was paramount over a long optical zoom. Nice wide angle and fast lens, pop up viewfinder and more modes than you can shake a stick at. So far the images have been crystal clear and pin sharp.

Bought this camera after reading other reviews as I needed a small camera for travel and family functions etc, one you can easily carry around with you instead of my bulky DSLR camera, and I have to say this takes great photos and easy to transfer to phone etc, no fuss point and shoot with manual settings if you want more options, black&white photos are excellent, early days but looking forward to more opportunities to use this fab little camera.

This was a breakthrough camera when it came out. Sony has iterated but not improved much on subsequent models. In some ways, sadly, mobile phones have supplanted this line now. But it was great initially, except they never updated it correctly. As a recurring theme.

Really dissapointed
Body Only 19 March 2024 (United Kingdom)
I purchased the camera from Photospecialist on 20/02/2024. After reading the specification for the camera it appeared exactly what I was looking for. One of key functions I required was to be able to transfer images from the camera to a smartphone using the NFC function. I tried for hours trying to set this up but could not get it to work. The manual stated that the Playmemories app needed to be installed on the smartphone, after checking Google Play store it stated that the IME app had replaced Playmemories. I assumed (wrongly) that the IME app would allow me set up the image transfer function. I contacted Sony Customer Support and was then told that needed the Creators app (Case number 26737107 refers). I spent another few hours trying to set the function up without success. I contacted Customer Support again and was then told the function would not work with Playmemories. At this stage I was annoyed that I had purchased a camera and one of the key functions would not work. I checked with Photospecialist who I purchased the camera from and they were not aware of the issue. I then checked with a number of online stockists and none were aware of this issue. I contacted Customer Services again and stated that I belief Sony were at fault for not making it clear that this function did work on the DSC RX100M3. They confirmed that the function did work DSC RX100M4 and I asked if they could arrange with Photospecialist to supply me with DSC RX100M4 at nil cost and I would return the DSC RX100M3 to Photospecialist. They stated that the issue would need to be escalated and would need to wait for one day for a decision. Today 19/03/2024 Customer Services have advised that this would not be possible and I would need to go back to the seller (Photospecialists). I have contacted Photospecialists who are very embarrassed by the issue, they do not have a DSC R100M in stock but have offered DSC R100VA at a reduced cost. This would mean me having to spend £200. I feel that Sony could have shown some goodwill for all of the inconvenience I have been caused for what is a very serious product management issue.

Small but Mighty
Body Only 27 October 2023 by Picelat0r (United Kingdom)
Not the newest of the RX100 stable but for me this is very much the value sweet spot. A little more reach at the telephoto end would be nice and the soap-like body is crying out for the aftermarket stick-on grip that should be supplied from new but small niggles aside this is a remarkable combinate of super-sharp lens, speedy processing and effective 1-inch sensor that displays surprisingly little noise in low light for a 20.1-megapixel unit. Throw in the pop-up viewfinder that magically appears from the body and then stows away to allow impressive pocket-ability and this is a proper powerhouse.

Great upgrade from a smartphone
Body Only 27 July 2023 by Sam90 (United Kingdom)
I wanted a camera that was a noticeable upgrade from a smartphone, portable, and didn't cost a fortune. I did a lot of research and went for this model in the end - and the results I have obtained even with my basic and limited knowledge of photography have far exceeded my expectations. If point and click is more your thing, this also does a superb job of that - and the camera knows more than I do at the moment when comparing my manual pictures to the settings the camera chooses on auto. I have also compared this side by side with an expensive DSLR, and whilst a good photographer would achieve better results with the bigger camera, for me the comparison was favourable for my RX and what I was trying to achieve. I don't intend to take up photography as a hobby, just obtain a greater understanding of it to take better pictures, and needed the equipment to enable me to do that - but this would be a great stepping stone for someone that did want to do that - before making the jump to a more complex and expensive product. You can make full adjustment around the exposure triangle, and the menu system is very easy to use. The zoom is not that big, so if that's important you may want to consider stepping up to models higher in this range, but for someone like me - using it on trips at home and abroad it's perfect - giving me control over the settings, and avoiding the horrible distortion that can occur on camera phones.

STAINED SCREEN - SONY RX100 III CAMERA
Body Only 21 April 2023 by MONICA_M (United Kingdom)
The screen of my RX100 III Camera shows permanent stains in its interior, which can be seen from the exterior. I'm dissapointed with its many faults. I'm very careful handling it and keep the camera inside a protective case. However, the screen stains can't be cleaned because they are located in its interior. It's obvious the screen is not properly sealed and humidity has gone inside it. It looks grubby. I'm very dissapointed as this camera is advertised as high-tech, but it is not. Same happened with the screen of my RX100 I, I'm sure Sony R&D is aware of the faulty screen. NOT recommended.

Body Only 20 March 2023 by Adeybabe (United Kingdom)
It’s a nice camera, with a number of useful functions, like RAW, good low light performance, a neutral density filter, for example. However, compared to the HX90V, it’s not such good value for money. In particular, I find the 3x optical zoom is very limiting, for example.

I do most of my photography with a compact and I do take a lot of photos so I get through cameras quite quickly, consequently I have tried a number of makes over the years and this is my first Sony. It is a good looking camera, though I have a couple of minor thoughts on design. It almost seems to be designed for designers, for example the body is very smooth, I am not sure why they could not have put a tactile surface on it rather than selling a stick on grip, secondly the shutter button is flush with the top plate which makes it difficult to feel for if you are looking at the screen or into the view finder or need to take a very quick photo. I have got around the smoothness and the risk of dropping it by using a wrist strap, that I did on previous cameras anyway, I did also buy the stick on grip but have yet to fit it. With the shutter button I found that feeling for the zoom control that sits in front of it a way of finding it blind. The button should be slightly raised and with a slight concave dip in it to position your finger. That aside the camera works well, the photos are sharp as I would expect with a Zeiss lens. Being new to it I had to do a little fine tuning of the features to get it as I want it to be. There is a users book with it, I find it irritating that it is quite so thick as it comes in a huge number of languages. That seems rather wasteful seeing as there are not many pages of instructions in each language, it can't be difficult to just include a manual for the country that the camera is being exported to or simply say it is on line to download. As to the information in it, one of the main things I wanted to know was what the different exposure options were, Auto, aperture priority, speed priority and so on, I know these mentioned but there were two I have never seen before, Superior auto and intelligent auto. There was no explanation of what any of these where, It took me ages on line to find out. Surely this is basic information that should be in a manual, long before what the European regulations are for safe disposal of the camera. I jest somewhat. Actually the on line manual is very good. The camera is surprisingly heavy for its quite small size which make it feel as though it is well made, which it seems to be. The controls are all firm and feel as though they will last. All in all and despite my observations on design and the manual, I am very pleased with it, it is a smart looking thing and above all, it does what I want, take good photos.

Fantastic camera, until it breaks.
Body Only 07 October 2022 by FedUpWithSony2 (United Kingdom)
The Sony RX100 series really are brilliant. It is a truly pocketable camera with a viewfinder that produces fantastic images. However I've given it one star. This is my third RX100 in nine years - since 2013. I've previously had an RX100 III and an RX100 VA. Both broke with what seem to me to be electrical faults, one in the sensor and one in the flash/viewfinder. The VA, which I looked after really carefully, lasted less than three years. It is currently at Sony for investigation but I don't expect much from them. Bizarrely the original RX 100 III, whose sensor failed, has lived in a box without it's battery whilst I had the VA. I recently took it out to send to Sony to look at as I was sending the VA anyway, but it now works fine again. Capacitance? I'd already bought the replacement Mk III when I realised this, and to be honest I expect if I start to use the original Mk III in anger then, having already failed catastrophically once, it will fail again. By way of comparison, the Canon EOS 20D and Panasonic LX5 I used from the 2005 to 2013 still work fine. Very reluctantly I've bought another RX100 III, as it is relatively cheap. I couldn't find another product that fitted my requirements quite so well, although in future it is quite likely I will switch to a smaller Fuji mirrorless. I expect this new Mk III will break in two - three years. I wouldn't bet money on it failing in the warranty period, but I would bet money it will fail within three years. I'm viewing the £469 outlay as a subscription - in order to have a camera that meets my needs for two years I have to pay a bit less than my Netflix and Disney+ subscriptions, and anything else is a bonus. However I find it pretty disgraceful that I am forced to think about thinks like that - not least from the waste in terms of resources and environment. I won't ever be buying any other Sony cameras ever again. Neither will I replace my long-lasting Sony TV with another TV from them. Or anything else electronic from Sony. I'm so fed up with this experience that the Sony brand is dirt to me.

Fantastic upgrade to Sony RX100 II
Body Only 01 August 2022 by Mart157 (United Kingdom)
Have used Sony RX100 II for almost 7 years. Bought this as an upgrade and am very happy. The lens is wider and faster, allowing for good low light shooting. There is a pop-up viewfinder which helps a lot with composition, especially in bright sunlight. And the sensor is better to my previous model. Overall, RX100's are very strong and robust cameras and perfect small size to take with me when I'm out and about. Indeed, because it is so small it's easier to take photographs without being spotted and this makes it perfect for street photogaraphy. Having used it for some weeks now I am very happy with Sony RX100 III.

My DSC-RX100M3 has been a workhorse for the past three years--I bought it for wide angle and low-light uses, and it has been great in those respects--but in the past year the C/Delete button has started triggering the recording function (incredibly annoying) and the software stopped working (terrible software, but the only way to transfer files from the camera via wifi). There have been no firmware updates while I've had the camera, it's out of warranty, etc. Sony should do more to stand by their products.

The RX100 has an astonishing range of features compared to my DSLR. The benefits of the 1" sensor are apparent when viewed on anything other than a computer screen. Body Only 08 February 2022 by gary stoddard (United Kingdom)
I had been thinking of buying a RX100 for some time, the size, quality and especially the viewfinder appealed. Unfortunately it did not live up to my expectations. The viewfinder was too small for me and I never managed to open or close it up properly first time. I could see it getting damaged quite easily. The biggest issue for me was the minimum aperture of f11. Any photo taken towards the sun was a complete washout. Shame as other than that metering, focussing and general usability were great.

I bought this used from a well-known internet market place as a replacement for my previous RX100 Mkii, and it is a definite improvement over the earlier models (I owned a RX100 Mki for some years). I like the pop-up viewfinder and the fact that it starts up very quickly. The sensor is defintely an improvement over earlier versions, being better in low light. I bought this to replace a broken DSC-HX60 which was going to cost a small fortune to repair despite it being a common problem with those cameras. I spotted this bargain in Currys and just had to go for it. It had mostly the same features which I was happy about but the enlarged sensor has improved the photo quality substantially over the HX60. So no complaints from me on this even if the magnification range isn’t as great. It it turns out, it has been more than adequate in this area too…

Excellent point and shoot camera
Body Only 03 October 2021 by Purejammy (United Kingdom) Verified Purchaser Verified
I was after a point and shoot camera because carting around my SLR was sometimes cumbersome. Following a bit of research, I choose the Sony RX100M3 because it shot RAW and had a full range of automatic and manual settings. The camera menus are well designed and can be navigated with ease. Function and Camera buttons can be assigned by the user to suit their individual needs. Outputs are excellent both in RAW and JPEG formats. The only negative aspects I could find (and they are in the blinking nuisance category, rather than being show stoppers) were the replacement of the electronic viewfinder switches the camera off. And, the transfer of images to a smartphone was cumbersome. Overall I am very pleased with this camera. It is easy to use and produces fantastic images. If it is a point and shoot you are after, then the RX100M3 will fit the bill.

It is too early for me to comment on the quality of the camera, as I am still getting used to it, but the picture quality certainly does look very good. However, I am very disappointed with the lack of wi-if facilities. Following advice from Sony, I started to install PlayMemories, which I found to be an unnecessary complicated process. I then read devastating reviews from almost all other users, and was completely put of the whole business. I would have thought that Sony could have come up with a much better system to match the quality of their cameras. I am now wondering if I made a mistake in buying this camera.

Excellent product, super handy, great images
Body Only 30 June 2021 by MarKat374 (United Kingdom) Verified Purchaser Verified
I bought this compact camera a couple of weeks ago as a replacement for my old one - which I had had for 15 years. Normally I would have been looking for a newer model of my previous compact cam as I'd always been very happy with it. However, upon recommendation from a colleague who is an ambitious hobby photographer I considered the Cyber-Shot RW100 III and finally decided to buy it. And I never regretted that decision. The image quality is superb, the camera is really handy and a great range of functionalities offers lots of room for creativity. I'm a hobby photographer, too, who particularly enjoys taking pictures during hikes or city trips. I deliberately decided against a DSLR camera as I was looking for something more practical - I'm not one to carry a number of lenses and other equipment with me, I need a camera that is ready to use right on the spot with just a few simple adjustments. Still, I wanted a camera with a very good image quality - and that is the RW100 III. The only possible drawback might be that the zoom range is relatively narrow. That's not an issue for me but someone who enjoys taking panoramic pictures might be a little disappointed. Nevertheless I'd recommend this camera to anyone looking to buy a high quality compact camera for leisure activities, traveling and also creative photography.

Good camera shame about the software
Body Only 11 April 2021 by MervArb (United Kingdom) Verified Purchaser Verified
I bought this camera a few weeks ago and I am very pleased with it. However, today I tried to use the WiFi function to transfer images from the camera to my android smartphone. I installed the PlayMemories Mobile app and tried to create a signin which is the first thing you have to do. It's impossible to do that. The app either locks up or claims I already have a signin (which I don't). Also, it mentions a PlayStation sign in! What's that got to do with it? I have read the reviews about the app and other people are having exactly the same problems. Can something be done to fix the app software? If not then the WiFi option in the product description should be removed. The WiFi image transferring was one of the reasons I bought this camera.

Little camera big results
Body Only 07 April 2021 by nikki61 (United Kingdom) Verified Purchaser Verified
Needed something small, pocket friendly yet able to use when walking or cycling and when something catches my eye I can easily take a picture/ The good news is that the quality of the taken picture seems very good and I can use. I am still learning what the camera can do and how to do it, with one downside being that I have accidentally hit some buttons and confused myself. My camera came with a grip and case the former is much needed as the size and shape of the camera make it difficult to handle without such an accessory.

Mostly great
Body Only 10 February 2021 by Dr Bill (United Kingdom) Verified Purchaser Verified
I'm very happy with my purchase in most ways - excellent lens, decent detector, great viewfinder, tilt screen. So 95% of my expectations have been fulfilled. Some niggles though . . . I want to do time-lapse photography and reading reviews learned that it would be simple to download a time-lapse app from Sony's "playmemories" application. I was disappointed to find that this is no longer offered and has been replaced by Imaging Edge, which has no time-lapse and offers very little for this camera apart from a very nice editor for RAW shots and wifi transfer of shots to a smartphone. This is made doubly annoying by the fact that playmemories apps appear, enticingly, in the camera's menu, but aren't available. I will now be buying a remote shutter control which includes a time-lapse feature and that will solve my particular problem. So there we are - delighted but with a tinge of disappointment.

I wanted a small travel camera that provided significantly better images than a smartphone. It’s early days but so far I’ve been delighted by the sharpness of the photos. I also think the various functions and modes are easy to navigate around

First time with a SONY camera, previous, Canon, Panasonic etc Takes a little getting used to but immersed myself in excellent online tutorials which benefited me before the camera arrived. I love the size of it and the power of it. It really is good. I wish they had made to photo push button a little bigger and deeper recessed...I struggled to find it in the dark. Apart from that, a great little camera. Got mine at a real good price. Satified.

Miniature DSLR!
Body Only 03 October 2020 by Brommers (United Kingdom) Verified Purchaser Verified
Just getting to grips with the RXI00M3, literally. First thing was fitting the Sony grip and glass screen protector, then a fake leather skin so it now handles so much better. Really looking forward to serious photos but the test ones so far are very impressive. Tested various photo software but the free Capture One gives the best RAW conversion and saves to 10mb Jpegs. I had the Canon M50 briefly, which was excellent but I love the size of the Sony and the lens speed is amazing.

Handy little camera
Body Only 27 September 2020 by Pete the biker (United Kingdom) Verified Purchaser Verified
I bought the Sony RX100iii camera from Currys. I already have Sony a7 which has served me well. Also use a Panasonic camera which feature a BSI 1" sensor which works well, especially for flower photography. The RX100iii also has 1" sensor, so I thought it would be handy as the camera is very compact. I find the resulting photos very pleasing. The only problem experienced is when photographing an intense violet flower on Auto white balance which gave a blue result. Easily solved by selecting manual WB which gave excellent result with colour very close to the flower.

Great little camera with one inch sensor, pop it in my pocket and goes everywhere with me, especially when I don't want to take my DSLR. Takes really good photos, not as good as my pro camera but that is to be expected.

Was looking for a great 'stick in the pocket' camera when I'm not going out for serious photography. I was a little dubious about the cost of these in the past but got this at a great price. Does everything a'big' camera can do but you can have it with you every time. Great image quality, easy to use (size might be an issue for larger hands) Once set up its always ready for that instant moment.

Body Only 11 September 2020 by severndale kid (United Kingdom) Verified Purchaser Verified
Very happy with the camera itself, and the results it produces. I find i am reaching more for this than my DSLR when i just want a lightweight, go anywhere shooter. My only gripes are certain aspects of design that smack of after thought, such as the stick on grip for the front and the method of filter attachment, surely these thing should be addressed at the design stage? Other than that, i have no complaints. The still images the camera produces are very, very good indeed, as is the video footage (which was a nice surprise!). All in all, i would have no hesitation in recommending.

Great camera to have in pocket

The f1.8 lens is a game changer. The viewfinder is really so much better than on my H90V it makes using it a pleasure. I gave 4 stars only on camera because of no flip sideways screen. The ability to tilt the screen however comes in handy

The Mouse that Roared
Body Only 23 July 2020 by Innfield (United Kingdom) Verified Purchaser Verified
I bought this about a month ago to save me carrying a backpack with two heavy DSLRs and a whole bunch of lenses everywhere I went. Now I shoot everything with this baby, and if I need to I can always go back with the big cameras. However, more often than not, the results from the RX100 lll are good enough on their own.
