Sony built the full-frame stacked CMOS image sensor with integral memory for the high-performance α9. The result is a smaller and lighter professional camera that contains fewer resources .
Despite steady progress in digital imaging technology, mechanical limitations have restricted the benefits for digital-SLR users to relatively minor improvements in size and features.
Now, with its ground-breaking innovation, Sony has transcended these limitations to redefine the future of interchangeable-lens cameras. The Exmor RS, the world's first 35mm full-frame stacked image sensor with integral memory, has achieved speed and performance well beyond the capabilities of other models, and while containing fewer resources.
The α9's sensor delivers great leaps in performance and image quality by providing rock-solid AF; silent, vibration-free continuous shooting up to 20fps; and a blackout-freeviewfinder.

A sensor designed for performance
The new stacked CMOS sensor found in the α9 delivers professional performance, without the constraints of mechanical systems found in conventional digital-SLRs.
An industry-first, high-speed, stacked sensor produces approx. 24.2 effective megapixel full-frame images, with up to 20x the readout speed thanks to integrated memory in the stack.

The α9 packs all the functionality of a conventional digital-SLR’s mirror, mechanical shutter, AF sensor and optical finder into the revolutionary Exmor RS image sensor, while also realising dramatic reduction to both the physical size and weight of the camera.
With the Exmor RS sensor, the α9 is approx. 20% smaller, in all three dimensions, than a conventional full-frame DSLR like Sony’s first full-frame model, the α900. Easier than ever to carry anywhere, anytime.
The α9 is testament to Sony's dedication to functionality and image quality, and also to greater shooting mobility. The evolution of the 35mm full-frame CMOS image sensor in the α9 delivers leading image performance and contributes to significant camera size reduction.
Nearly 10 years ago, Sony stunned the industry with its first full-frame digital SLR, the α900 - weighing in at 850g. Now, the new α9, at just 588g, weighs 30% less, improving both mobility and stability.

Innovation that benefits everyone
Professional photographers depend on capturing dramatic moments to deliver emotional stories – whether for the news, a sports event, or a wedding. To meet these demands, as well as working towards Sony’s goal of a zero environmental footprint, we constantly strive to develop smaller, lighter cameras, without compromising image quality or speed.
Our new full-frame stacked CMOS sensor offers incredible imaging performance. It also integrates multiple functions, helping reduce components to trim both size and weight of the α9. It’s all part of Sony’s pursuit of the most effective use of natural resources, while developing advanced technology and products.
