Innovative full-frame stacked CMOS sensor with integral memory
α9 liberates you from the limits of conventional SLRs that rely on mechanical systems. First to use high-speed stacked design, its 24.2-megapixel full-frame image sensor temporarily stores large-volume data in the integral memory for overall 20 times faster readout speed. Light directly reaches the image sensor without mechanical interruption. An ingenious fusion of mirrorless construction and new speed-enhancing technologies provides AF/AE at the full-frame focal plane.

Electronic shutter speeds up to 1/32000 sec. far surpass mechanical shutters for a new imaging expression. You can also maintain shallow depth of field without an ND filter, even under bright conditions.

An anti-distortion electronic shutter allows silent shooting without mechanical mirror and shutter noise. It’s ideal for sports and subjects that demand quiet operation, greatly expanding camera versatility.
During SLR shooting, mirror shock and shutter release shock cause subtle vibration. α9, however, has a vibration-free electronic shutter that can keep the camera stable, for razor-sharp images.

Now with newly developed AF features introduced in a software update, enhanced AF ensures precise focus and consistently steady tracking.
With AI-based subject recognition, AF's intelligence evolves
Real-time Tracking and Real-time Eye AF are both designed for fast, precise and intelligent tracking of your subject, using AI-based algorithms and processing an enormous amount of data in real time.
Further enhancing the camera's subject-tracking ability, now a subject's eyes can be detected as soon as the shutter is half-pressed or the AF-ON button is pressed, then tracked continuously. It is also possible to select either the subject's left eye or right eye.
Capture subjects with high AF precision down to light levels as low as EV-3 at ISO 100, due to the high sensitivity image sensor.
Focal-plane phase-detection AF system with 693 AF points functions reliably. Enjoy up to 10fps continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking even when you use A-mount lenses with a mount adapter (LA-EA3).
More stable AF for movies has been achieved thanks to more effective use of the Fast Hybrid AF's focal-plane phase-detection system. Even objects crossing in front of the main subject don't disrupt the autofocus.
Full-frame 24.2-megapixel sensor with sensitivity up to ISO 204800 and wide dynamic range captures outstanding image quality.
High sensitivity, a back-illuminated configuration, gapless on-chip lens architecture, and other Sony innovations deliver stunning images in a wide range of photographic situations. Standard ISO range is ISO 100-51200, expandable to ISO 50-204800 with minimum noise.
The camera's image-processing algorithms have been upgraded with the latest software update, allowing higher levels of natural tonal gradations and more stable AWB for continuous shooting.
High-resolution quality of 4K movies
Full-pixel readout with no pixel binning makes it possible to condense approximately 2.4 times the amount of data required for 4K (the equivalent of the amount of data required for 6K) into 3840 x 2160 4K output. This oversampling process plus full-frame pixel readout without binning results in the highest possible 4K movie image quality.
In addition to a magnesium alloy body that assures the camera’s all-around toughness and reliability, largely amplified versatile features enhance operability, supporting severe usage in professional photography.
The new high-resolution 3686k-dot electronic viewfinder (EVF) shows a clear image with fine detail. The legendary ZEISS® T* Coating greatly reduces reflections. Smooth EVF images realised by 120fps frame rate even allow you to easily track a subject in fast motion. Fluorine coating on the outermost lens provides improved protection from dirt.
New body-integrated 5-axis image stabilisation unit offers a 5.0-stop shutter speed advantage. The live-view monitor image is also stabilised, so you can compose images easily even when shooting a fast-moving subject. (1) Yaw (2) Pitch (3) Roll
A newly developed NP-FZ100 battery offers approximately twice the life of the previous NP-FW50. Capture up to approx. 480 still frames on one charge — and further increase the number of shots with an attached optional vertical grip (sold separately) that can hold two batteries.
With two media slots, including one that's UHS-II-compatible for fast data writing, the α9 can record simultaneously or in relay, separate RAW and JPEG data, separate still shots and movies, and copy data between cards.
To meet the professional's demand for immediate delivery of images, the camera now supports FTP background transfer while shooting continues or after shooting finishes. The transfer method and the filtering methods have been improved to make it easier to specify which files you wish to transfer.
The rating function lets you rate still images with 1 to 5 stars at any time, giving you more flexibility for your workflow. Still images can be rated on the playback screen, and the function can be assigned to a custom button.
Groups of shots taken in continuous mode can be reviewed, deleted, or protected quickly. You can access the menu screen and change settings, as well as play back images while writing data.
Register menu items with My Menu, access camera functions via custom button assignments, use stacked drive mode and focus mode dials for quick access, and use the AF-ON button to initiate autofocus and the multi-selector to shift AF points.
