Transfer pictures and videos from a memory stick camcorder to a Windows computer

Before you start

• If you have a hard disk drive (HDD), tape (Digital8®,8mm, Hi8™), DVD, or miniDVD camcorder, refer to the transfer video to your computer article.
• Depending on your camera, instructions may be different. Refer to your operation manual for details. Manuals are posted on your model support page.

Transfer pictures and videos to your Microsoft® Windows® computer

1. Turn on your computer.
2. Make sure the camcorder has sufficient power.
   • Plug the AC adapter into a working wall outlet or make sure the batteries are fully charged.
3. Connect the camcorder to the computer with the supplied or built-in USB cable.
4. If not already in the camcorder, insert the memory card with your pictures and videos into the card slot.
5. Open the LCD screen of the camcorder to turn it on.
6. On the LCD screen, touch the Computer or USB Connect option.
   • The computer will automatically install the appropriate USB drivers if it's your first time connecting the camcorder to your computer.
7. Transfer your pictures and videos to your computer using one of the following methods:
   • Use the Import Pictures and Videos option

     1. In the AutoPlay window, click Import Pictures and Videos using Windows.
     2. In the Import Pictures and Videos window that appears, click Import Settings.
     3. In the Import Settings window, assign the location on the computer where you want to copy your pictures and videos.
        • To save your pictures and videos in a different location, click the Browse button.
     4. Click OK.
     5. In the Import Pictures and Videos dialog box, click the OK button.
     6. Click the Import button.

   • Use the supplied Handycam Utility application

     Note: Check your operation guide to verify if this utility is supplied with your camera.

     1. Start the Handycam Utility application bundled with the Picture Utility software.
     2. In the Handycam Utility window, click to select the type of files you want to transfer: HD movies, SD movies, or Pictures.
     3. Click the Import button.

   • Manually copy and paste your pictures and videos

     1. On the computer desktop, create a new folder.
     2. Double-click on My Computer and check for the Removable Disc or USB Drive that represents the camera or recording media inserted in the camera.
     3. Double-click on the Removable Disk or USB Drive then click to select all the pictures or videos you want to copy.
     4. On the keyboard, press the CTRL+C keys to copy the folders and files.
     5. Open the new folder that you created.
     6. In the new folder, press the CTRL+V keys on the keyboard to paste the folders and files into the new folder.
     7. Rename the new folder as desired.
