[A] Development of system technology aimed at miniaturization and weight reduction for HMDs (Head Mounted Displays) and glasses-free 3D displays.
[B] Real-time 3D sensing/rendering technology that fuses virtual and reality.
[C] XR content production technology utilizing cloud-edge distribution and AI technology.

When presenting mixed reality, which merges the real and virtual worlds, through a head-mounted display (HMD), it is necessary to maintain the sense of presence of virtual objects while preventing VR sickness. This requires ensuring the spatial consistency between the real space and virtual objects through image processing, and ensuring low-latency tracking of head movements to update the display. We are addressing these challenges by integrating our own sensing and rendering techniques with Sony's sensor and display devices. Our latest achievements, summarized in a paper [1] we presented, received the Best Paper Award at IEEE VR 2023.

Products or services in this decade needs to be ‘intelligent’. To be more intelligent, such products or services would need devices to percept its surroundings even better than they do now. In such world, they would be carrying multiple sensors or visual image sensors, to understand the surrounding environments / human beings / obstacles or other informations better. For such area Sony owns very strong position on image sensors and Sony also have created Vision processing SoCs.
Our team are working together with both production teams of such future products and core research engineer teams in machine vision domain, from computational systems and system architecture point of view.
