This 0.7-inch, ultra-small, high-definition color OLED display features 2.8M effective pixel resolution (720p), high contrast, wide color gamut, and fast response - all of which have been realized through Sony’s unique expertise in both OLED display and semiconductor silicon drive technologies. It is adopted into 'HMZ-T1', which is the world's first* 3D compatible Head Mounted Display equipped with high definition OLED display.

  • *As a 3D-compatible Head Mounted Display for consumer product (released on August 31, 2011).

Development Background

The anticipated uses for this Head Mounted Display includes viewing movies and games in both 2D and 3D, so it is required to generate enhanced depth and realism for fast moving 3D video images, as well as high resolution, brilliant colors, and superior moving picture quality, without any blur. The size of the OLED panel must also be ultra-small, as it is required to be mounted within the restricted space inside the Head Mounted Display.

Sony newly developed this 0.7 inch OLED display with 2.8M effective pixels (720p) in order to meet these requirements. The new display also incorporates technologies adopted in the electronic viewfinders of Sony new range of digital single-lens cameras, announced on August 24, 2011 (“α77”, “α65”, “NEX-7”).

Key Features

Ultra-small size / high definition image quality
Sony has succeeded in creating this ultra-small, high-definition 0.7 inch display by realizing a pixel size of 4um x 12um. The ultra-small size and high-definition image quality were achieved by adopting a color separation method that overlays a color filter over the top of the white organic EL layer.

High contrast / wide color gamut / fast response
Realizes inherent features of OLED displays, such as high contrast, a wide color gamut and fast response, resulting in detail-rich images and video, more natural color reproduction, smoother gradation properties and superior moving picture quality.

Generally, the smaller the pixel size becomes, the more difficult it is to reproduce precise color. However, this issue has been overcome through the combination of Sony’s unique expertise in both OLED display and semiconductor silicon drive technologies, making it possible to maximize the properties of the OLED display, despite its ultra-small size.

Built-in driver
Various features required to drive the display, including the D/A converter, have been built into the silicon back plane. This has contributed to a reduction in the space needed to accommodate the panel within the main body of the Head Mounted Display.
