Food for the Future
Sustainable diet for a healthy planet
Eating is an essential part of our lives. On the other hand, the food we eat is linked to many
environmental issues like soil pollution, deforestation, food waste and global warming.
These issues affect all people on Earth, and we at Sony believe it is our duty to help solve
them.
This is why we are promoting the "Food for the Future" project.
Most food production, including fishery, farming and livestock, is related to nature. In fact, a variety of environmental impacts have become major problems, such as declining fish populations due to overfishing, deforestation due to inappropriate cultivation of farmland, and soil pollution due to inappropriate disposal of livestock waste.
The food we buy generally comes from various parts of the world and is transported to our stores by trucks, ships, and airplanes. CO2 emissions produced by the fuels used in the transportation of food are also a contributor to global warming. Foods transported from distant places produce more CO2 emissions during transportation than locally grown foods.
Each year, over 900 million tons, or 74 kg per capita, of food waste is generated around the world. There are many factors contributing to this, for example, leftovers and other foods that are untouched in households, as well as leftovers in restaurants, and waste from stores. As a result, not only is the food wasted, but also the energy, water and other resources used from production to disposal.
In order to address these environmental issues, Sony has set the goal of "promoting the use of environmentally conscious food" and encouraging each and every employee to be aware of and take action on the use of environmentally conscious food not only when eating in the company cafeteria, but also in their daily lives.
A guidebook was created and distributed to employees with small tips that they can incorporate into their daily lives, for example, choosing foods with sustainable labels. Other activities include holding in-company seminars to raise the awareness of employees or events to discuss with employees the importance of having a sustainable diet.
For our society to be truly sustainable, we must always consider that food has a connection with the environment. With that in mind, we have created this booklet as a guide to the actions we can all take to eat more sustainably.
Menus using sustainable foods will be offered in employee cafeterias around the world. Through the cafeteria, a familiar place for employees, we will discuss with them the importance of sustainable diet.
Through our Food for the Future project, we at Sony will help achieve Goals 2, 12, 13, 14 and 15 of the SDGs.
