CCD-TR55
Video Camera Recorder (1989)
The first TR series model. This passport-sized Handycam® enjoyed record sales. The right-mounted lens marked a break from the inline layout of previous camcorders. Additionally, the cassette compartment was moved to the grip, the mic was flattened, and other innovations made this a model that redefined the basic structure of video cameras. Design refinements enabled what device technology alone could not: a unit of revolutionary size, weighing only 790g. In honor of this achievement, the camcorder bears the serial number of the first Sony transistor radio, TR-55.
