Cameras reimagined as lens-like extensions of a smartphone, which extend the phone’s shooting performance accordingly. Free from some limitations of traditional photography – having to hold the camera in one’s hand and have the subject in one’s line of sight – these compact cylinders can also be removed from smartphones to shoot freely, from any angle. It’s enjoyable, this freedom to shoot from creative angles, and as free as the motion of your arm itself. Imagine operating your own camera crane to find angles that would normally be out of reach. The cameras bring users new shooting experiences, playfully tempting us to follow our creative instincts.

A more ergonomic approach to endoscopic surgery, linking an endoscope to a head-mounted display. System design supports hygiene equally well, in coloring and styling alike. We must also commend the manufacturer for proving the system’s effectiveness in surgery.

Attached to a racket, the Smart Tennis Sensor reveals where balls strike the racket and other information in real time on a smartphone. The analysis is very accurate, too – amazingly so – and the sensor can even distinguish forehands from backhands. With an accompanying app, users who record a video of themselves practicing while the sensor is attached can extract and play back all backhand swings, for example. Reviewing this video record of how you play makes practice more valuable. And the fact that the app supports practice instead of turning it into some kind of game makes the design refreshingly straightforward.
Lifelog
Selected in the Best 100, 2014 Good Design Awards
Jury Comments
Lifelogging has quickly become familiar to many. Some will eagerly wear another sensing device while others rely on their smartphone, but this versatile app caters to users of both kinds. In an app used every day, the interface is clearly important, and that’s what sets this one apart. We hope to see the app periodically updated, to encourage lifeloggers to stay interested and motivated.

4K projector that brings walls to life through an ultra short-throw lens. What will surely delight owners is the moment when their living room transforms into a theater, as an ordinary wall becomes a vast screen. The dramatic transformation relies on an elegant appearance when the projector is off, as might be expected in fine furniture: sleek, contemporary styling, down to the details. Not only in form but also in the carefully selected materials, meticulous finish, and graceful moving parts, the projector certainly shows how the designers and engineers shared the same vision and goals.
