About KUKAN DESIGN AWARD

Established to connect the value of spatial design to the future, the KUKAN DESIGN AWARD is
one of the most esteemed spatial design awards in Japan.
The mission behind the KUKAN DESIGN AWARD is to mine the solutions of
our society’s multi-faceted challenges and break through to a hopeful future.
Entries are judged on seven criteria: contemporary, creative, social, cultural, well-designed, innovative, and sustainability.
In 2021, "Sustainable Space of the Year" award was newly created to recognize projects
that contribute to realizing a better sustainable future.

Sony Park Exhibition KYOTO

Gold Prize

The creative, hands-on exhibition programs created with six artists from the Sony Music Group on the theme of six businesses that Sony is involved in. It took place in the underground space of the Kyoto Shimbun former printing plant that is normally closed to the public. Designed in cooperation with the spatial designer Takashi Nakahara and Mariko Abe, the space and structure were created with respect for the historical space, effectively leaving blank space. In the space with a ceiling height of approximately 10 meters, we installed the artworks of contemporary artist Takuro Tamayama to make the space itself an art.

Sony's Booth

Sustainable Space of the Year

The Sony’s booth at CEATEC, one of the largest international IT and electronics exhibitions in Asia. The exhibits introduced various initiatives that contribute to the environment, composed of examples of the technologies that Sony is currently working on from the three perspectives of "The Planet," "Society," and "People." Original Blended Material, an environmentally conscious paper material developed by Sony, was used in various forms such as display stands in the exhibition.
