Connecting pro baseball players with children
in the hospital via remote XR Catch

The Sony Creative Center recently provided its XR Catch experience for an event in the "G hands" program, a Yomiuri Giants pro baseball team initiative that brings players and staff together with fans to build a broad base of support and make meaningful social contributions. As part of that effort, the team organized a fun-filled game of "remote catch" on June 28, 2024 (Fri.), between players at the Tokyo Dome and children at Shimane University Hospital (Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture) using XR Catch – an experience that allows users to throw around a "virtual ball" relying solely on sound.

The XR Catch experience uses virtual-ball to replicate the smooth back-and-forth tempo of a regular game of catch. When a player releases the virtual ball to throw it toward their partner, the interface emits three sounds. The partner then times their catch based on the rhythm of the sounds.

For the G hands event, Giants pitchers Tomoyuki Sugano, Iori Yamasaki, Yuji Akahoshi, and Haruto Inoue took time after their pregame warmups at the Tokyo Dome to link up with four children at Shimane University Hospital via MUSVI Inc.'s "MADO" telepresence system. Once everything was set, it was time for some fun with XR Catch and a one-of-a-kind bonding experience.

"The experience is revolutionary, I think. It's incredible to be able to connect so easily with children who could literally be anywhere," Sugano says. "I'm thrilled to be part of these kinds of projects that help children feel better."

"Shimane and Tokyo are so far apart, but I felt like the players were right here with us. It was so much fun," one child said. "And when the smartphone buzzed, it felt like I was catching a real ball"

"To me, baseball is a sport that connects players and fans," a nurse added. "That's what XR Catch does, too. These children, who can't do everything other children can do just because they happen to be in the hospital, got to play catch with real players all the way over at the Tokyo Dome. Just imagine the strength that experience gave them."

After Sugano finished his game of XR Catch, Yamasaki, Akahoshi, and Inoue took their turns. During Yamasaki's session, he made a throw and said, "OK, get ready—I just threw the ball!" When his partner snagged the virtual ball perfectly, Akahoshi and Inoue yelled out "Nice catch!" in a memorable, happy moment for the whole group.

How the event came to be:

We'd been looking forward to doing a game of remote catch for so long, and COVID-19 and other complications just extended the wait. I'm so glad that we finally got to make it happen. Not only did the players have a great time doing it, but seeing the smiles on the children’ faces was so inspirational, too.

I've always wanted to find ways to do fun, exciting events for children undergoing treatment in the hospital. XR Catch was a great fit, and it was so much more realistic than I thought it was going to be. It’s an experience that really helps people dream bigger.

The XR Catch project got its start when I told the design team that I wanted to play catch with my son. From there, the designers set out to create an "inclusive game of catch" that allows anyone, no matter how old they are or what disabilities they might have, to experience the fun of throwing a ball around. But through the G hands event, with children in the hospital playing catch with actual Giants pitchers, I feel like the XR Catch event made more than just my dream come true.
